OBAMA 2.0

Good Monday morning. Today is: Martin Luther King Day and the second day of the second term of the 44th President of the United States.  Today is also the 1463rd day of the Obama presidency.

Poet Richard Blanco is Miami's connection to the inaugural. He will be reading his poetry at the inaugural today, becoming (in no significant order) the first Hispanic to be the inaugural poet, the youngest inaugural poet, the first (openly) gay inaugural poet, and the first poet from Florida.

Since court is closed, here's a little presidential trivia to keep you busy:
Lincoln's second inaugural address was 701 words. He used the word "I" once.
1) This president was the first to: make a phone call, drive a car, and he had six Chiefs of Indian nations at his inaugural parade, including Chief Geronimo.  Teddy Roosevelt.
2) This presidential candidate was the last to get a cabinet position in the next administration.  Adlai Stevenson.
3) This president was the last to have a pony on the white house grounds. JFK- Caroline had a pony.
4) This vice president was the first to become president through the death of a president. John Tyler. Harrison died a month after his inaugural.
5) This president served the shortest term of any president. Harrison.
6) What is Harry Truman's FULL middle name? Just "S", the explanation for which varies.
7) Which two presidents died on the 4th of July? Jefferson and Adams.
8) Which president is credited with first using the term "O.K."? Martin Van Buren.
9) Who was the first president to live in the White House? John Adams.
10) Who was the first president to receive votes from women? Warren Harding in 1920. Although since he was on the losing ticket as VP, Franklin Roosevelt would have been an acceptable choice as well.
11) What president was the first to receive the oath of office from a former president? Taft first swore in Calvin Coolidge in 1925 before swearing in Herbert Hoover in 1929.

Upcoming in the REGJB this week: Closing arguments Tuesday before Judge Tinkler-Mendez in the case involving the disappearance of Rilya Wilson.

The 2013 Super Bowl is Ravens vs. 49'ers. Vegas has San Fran as 4 1/2 favourites. Take the Ravens and the points. Actually, the Ravens will win so take the Ravens and the money line. And as always, 100% guaranteed, we will tell you whether the coin toss will be heads or tails.

Enjoy the day off. See you in court next week.

We will be traveling quite a bit overseas in the next few months, if you want to be a guest blogger, shoot us an email.

  1. SCENE Chambers of Mr. Justice Milton Hirsch:

    MJMH: (yelling) MONEYPENNY! GET IN HERE. Has the white house called? It's only a few weeks to inauguration and I need to make plans.

    Moneypenny: So Mr. Justice, they have not called.

    MJMH: That's it! I'm done playing games with them. Call the 4-H Club in Apopoka that invited me to speak. Tell them I am accepting their invitation. THEN when the White House does call, tell them I have already made other plans. That should fix them.

    MP: Right away Mr. Justice.

  3. Not saying all are correct but Hoover is wrong. Taft gave the oath to a president before Hoover.

  4. Thank God it is not Romney, watching the Inauguration as I could not make it this year with my friends who are enjoying D.C. without me this year.

    As I watch the President I have goose bumps. God Bless the President of the United States of America. May he continue to lead with provident strength.

    in which country did we stage a military coup in 1954?

    have you been watching oliver stone's history of america?

  6. Harry S. Truman did not have a middle name. The S stood for a compromise between the names of his two grandfathers -- Anderson Shippe Truman and Solomon Young.

    What is my prize Rump?

  7. Justice Roberts is an asshole, he has to say Hussein it is what it is, sour petty grapes. That what you call boy complex. You seen Jutice Sotomayor address Joe Biden as Joseph R. Biden. I see it in this Courthouse all the time sometimes white people don't even know they do it because they've been sucked up to for so many years and just can't accept a black man being in power.
    To you I say go to hell, accept it or respect it.

  10. Im pretty sure Obama insisted on his middle name being used. It was used the first time as well.

  11. How is it racist to use a president's full name while swearing them in?

    As I recall, George Walker Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, etc... were all sworn in in similar fashion.

    Besides, Hussein is Barack Obama's middle name. His Kenyan father gave him that name. Why is it racist?

  13. AM: did you listen to what the president said in his speech? About putting divisiveness aside? About working together? Perhaps you should take Mr. Obama's words to heart and stop with the race baiting, insult-hurling posts.

  14. @A.M., stfup. Not everything is a conspiracy. Ok. Now, am I the only one who caught the mistake by Meyers?? She said Obama was 45th President. I'm pretty sure he's the 44th.

  15. If the readers of this blog should have learned anything is that a name is meaningless. "what's in a name? Would not a rose by any other name smell as sweet? "

    It doesn't matter if the president's middle name is Hussein, Kennedy, Hitler, or Lincoln. It matters what he does not what name his parents gave him.

  16. #3 JFK ( for Caroline )
    &
    #7 John Adams and Tomas Jefferson, the same day, not just the same date of July 4th.

  17. Tomas Jefferson? The first Hispanic president, DS?

    Actually, more like Tomas Yefferson...

    I'll be here all week, folks. Two drink minimum. Don't forget to tip your servers. CDs for sale in the lobby.

  18. Rumpole,

    Correct, the name does not matter, however Justice Sotomayor addressed the VP as "Joseph R. Biden" and what a coincidence John Roberts did not follow suit as if trying to ridicule the name, that is the ghist of the point here.

  19. 12:01, You know what I hate? Individuals who make it a point to find something racist about everything. How pathetic.

  21. Actually, based upon the way Obama was introduced at the luncheon following the Inauguration, he prefers just his middle initial H. It may only be Roberts who, for the second time, felt it necessary to have the President's full name used. The fact that Sotomayor chose to use only Biden's middle initial, may have been her own decision.

    I don't think it was racist, just Roberts preference.

  22. Wouldn't it have been amazing had Kelly Clarkson sung the abolitionist verses for "My Country 'Tis of Thee" today, all things considered?

    My country, 'tis of thee,
    Stronghold of slavery, of thee I sing;
    Land where my fathers died,
    Where men man’s rights deride,
    From every mountainside thy deeds shall ring!

    My native country, thee,
    Where all men are born free, if white’s their skin;
    I love thy hills and dales,
    Thy mounts and pleasant vales;
    But hate thy negro sales, as foulest sin.

    Let wailing swell the breeze,
    And ring from all the trees the black man’s wrong;
    Let every tongue awake;
    Let bond and free partake;
    Let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.

    Our father’s God! to thee,
    Author of Liberty, to thee we sing;
    Soon may our land be bright,
    With holy freedom’s right,
    Protect us by thy might, Great God, our King.

    It comes, the joyful day,
    When tyranny’s proud sway, stern as the grave,
    Shall to the ground be hurl’d,
    And freedom’s flag, unfurl’d,
    Shall wave throughout the world, O’er every slave.

    Trump of glad jubilee!
    Echo o’er land and sea freedom for all.
    Let the glad tidings fly,
    And every tribe reply,
    “Glory to God on high,” at Slavery’s fall.

  28. How dare anyone suggest that the use of "Hussein" was not a racist attack by that conservative, piece of crap, CJ. Even if Obama wanted it there, it is still racist because everything that Obama says or does is wonderful and good and everything that a conservative says is biased poop. I get goose bumps too. Obama is just TOO wonderful.
