From Nicholas Kristoff's Sunday Times Column:
THIS is what poverty sometimes looks like in America: parents here in Appalachian hill country pulling their children out of literacy classes. Moms and dads fear that if kids learn to read, they are less likely to qualify for a monthly check for having an intellectual disability....
This is painful for a liberal to admit, but conservatives have a point when they suggest that America’s safety net can sometimes entangle people in a soul-crushing dependency. Our poverty programs do rescue many people, but other times they backfire.
The ironic thing is that it has taken an avowed collectivist to bring back the intellectual side of the conservative argument. Interesting article.

That's it folks. I'm done. You've been a great audience, remember to tip your waitresses.
I remember as a Junior High School student that my very enlightened teacher made us read the journal of poor Appalachians and how they survived on the government assistance provided. Those images of starvation will never leave my mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm a liberal, but I agree with you. CONUNDRUM.
Ram Emanuel said it "Democrats are retarded. Rump the majority of American's on public assistance are white republicans. The leading state is Alabama, Louisiana, Miss, mostly the red states account for the majority of public assistance do your research.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I hear that point it piques me. If the playing field was leveraged including fare wages then perhaps this wouldn't be the case while the greedy ass republicans try and disadvantage and eat all the American economical pie.
Last but not least, I'm glad the dolgirls lost to Sanfrancisco, I cant stand Steve Ross, Jeff Ireland, or Joe Stupid.
AM: Fare? Really?
