This political ad for Judge David Miller is just......awful. The voice over is about as bad as we have ever heard. The sound is bad, the music doesn't fit and the message is obtuse. Yes, we know Judge Miller has the reputation of agreeing to set hearings at unusual hours, but really, most voters will not care about that. Plus, the pull away shot shows him reading, out loud, to .....no one. Which is sort of weird. Most of have learned to read silently without moving our lips since we were about 8 or so. The penultimate shot of Miller with his wife and dog is a good one, but that's about it for this amateurish ad.
By contrast, this commercial by Tanya Brinkley is much better. The music is similar which leads us to believe they may have both used the same company to create the commercial, but it is a bit softer. The images that are projected are more compelling and interesting and there is an underlying message of Ms. Brinkley out in the community dealing with people. The voice over is much better and the only complaint here is that the two very close close ups of Ms. Brinkley don't really work. We would have pulled back a bit on both. But over all the commercial works much better.
We're not endorsing or "not endorsing" anyone here. We're merely drawing upon our vast knowledge, accumulated many years ago, of election advertising.

Indeed Romney was over heard saying "why don't they just turn up the AC in their Escalade or vacation home if they're hot?"

Tanya smiles more in this one commercial than I've ever seen her smile in the courthouse in the past 10 years. When you walk into her traffic mag court its like walking into the morgue.

ReplyDeleteHere's the deal New Esq- when you look around the courtroom and can't figure out who the fish is, it's you. Lawyers will lie and cheat and leave you holding the bag. And that's your co-counsel and friends. Prosecutors will abuse you and your client just for fun, and threaten your clients with horrific sentences just to keep you up at night. Judges will smile at you and chat nicely with you in chambers and offer you some coffee and then jam you so hard in court on the record that not even your momma will be able to make you feel better.
ReplyDeleteClients that you have worked your ass off for, who you have put your own money in their accounts so they can buy a tooth brush, will turn on you- not to save a day in jail- but just to save a few hours in jail. They will file multiple bar complaints accusing you of the worst possible conduct and seek your disbarment and they will rat you out to the feds as well if they can.

I find the Ad ok the voice over could have been better the voice over guy doesn't sound convincing or prestigious. Judge Miller came out to a forum and he's a natural at speaking publicly and came across congenial.We all know this is not exactly the judges empowerment on the bench, and should understand that a judge really cant smile while deciding serious matters so I don't hold that against them.
ReplyDeleteWhat is preeminent to me is the judges impartiality, temperament, perspicuity, diversity awareness, and knowledge of the Law. Judge Miller's mail out that I received proclaimed 7am hearings, I must say that is a little puzzling, from my understanding the Metro Justice Building opens at 8am. Perhaps someone can share an account of this statement. I don't doubt it but that detail is obscure to the common voter.
Judge Miller came out to the NAACP forum and came across very judicial, congenial, and even humorous. I give em credit for that he even stayed and mingled a little after the event which is always a plus he seemed to be genuine. We shall pay attention of course and see he has my vote I thought he is more qualified.

I voted for Teresa Pooler but she made a comment that was very concerning although be it a common one that a candidate that had debated at St. Agnes came across to her as angry.The candidate was being assertive, and being that she interpreted assertion for anger, I question her diversity. To be honest she was very nervous and off track so that added to me questioning her diversity and qualification. Although I voted for her, I think maybe Deyhuree is the better candidate, I was offended by her comment.
Last but not least, Kathy, Kathy, dirty little Kathy, Al Lorenzo, her consultant hiring "Bolateras" and employing convicted felons who'm she has prosecuted then saying that the claim is unsubstantiated only to turn around after being publicly exposed forced to recuse herself and retains this scoundrel to run her campaign, who admitted he knew of this criminal Jerry Ramos person from day one. What happened to integrity and honesty and most importantly respect for the Law?
Knowing Teresa Pooler and Victor De Yurre as traffic court hearing officers, I voted for De Yurre without hesitation.

ReplyDeleteJudge Philip Bloom conducted hearings at 7 am. There was always a guard at 73 West Flagler who unlocked the door for you. It was nice if you had an emergency motion: Bloom would hear it right away. In civil, getting a hearing on a motion longer than 5 minutes is difficult. Miller is like that. I have been in front of him countless times. Totally unpretentious. Like talking to someone at the Rotary Club. I will vote for him and ask others to do the same.

The police investigation into alleged absentee-ballot fraud in Hialeah expanded Wednesday to 164 absentee ballots mailed at a post office shortly after a woman was discovered two weeks ago carrying dozens of them.
Detectives with the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Public Corruption Unit interviewed on Tuesday and Wednesday voters whose ballots were part of the latest batch. Previously, 31 questionable absentee ballots had been discovered.
One of the voters interviewed this week was Milagros Guerrero, 64.
“I only handed in three ballots,” Guerrero told El Nuevo Herald without naming the person she gave them to. “I was already interviewed by the detectives and have nothing more to say.”
On the afternoon of July 25, authorities arrested Deisy Cabrera, 56, with about 10 absentee ballots. Detectives had also watched her as she mailed an additional 19 absentee ballots at a post office at 2200 NW 72nd Ave.
Cabrera was charged Aug. 2 with forging the signature on an absentee ballot and two minor counts of possessing other people’s ballots in violation of a county ordinance. The allegedly forged signature was that of Zulema Gómez, who lives at a nursing home and suffers from a brain tumor.
Cabrera surrendered at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office the day El Nuevo Herald reported Gómez’s case. One of the detectives to whom she surrendered visited Guerrero’s house Wednesday, accompanied by another officer.
Wednesday, detectives interviewed at least two other elderly voters who live in federally subsidized apartments, according to a city source.
Spokesmen for the police and the state attorney’s office would not comment Wednesday on the case because the investigation is ongoing.
Christina White, deputy director of the Miami-Dade Elections Department, said she was notified about the 164 absentee ballots at the end of last week. She said police told her the ballots had been mailed at a post office. Officials would not confirm the post office’s location, but sources familiar with the case said it is the post office at 2200 NW 72nd Ave.
“The elections supervisor decided to handle them the way we have handled the other 31 ballots,” White wrote in an email to El Nuevo Herald.
After Tuesday’s election, in which Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez faces Joe Martinez and other candidates, as well as numerous legislative, municipal and judicial races, a special committee will examine the 195 ballots to determine which are valid.
The investigation has stirred turmoil in Miami-Dade because Cabrera had promoted the campaigns of several politicians and officials, including Gimenez. Cabrera was arrested a block away from Gimenez’s campaign office in Hialeah.
The arrest was witnessed by Hialeah City Council member Vivian Casals-Muñoz and entrepreneur Jorge González, who were helping on Gimenez’s campaign. González said they approached the detectives to ask what was going on, but were told to stay away.
Gimenez has said Cabrera was never part of his campaign. After her arrest, critics and political activists questioned what seemed to be a conflict of interest of State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle in this case because she shared the same consulting firm with Gimenez — Quantum Results.
Fernandez-Rundle recused herself from the case after being informed that someone working for a firm hired by her campaign had been seen with Cabrera. Broward State Attorney Michael Satz has been appointed to prosecute the case.
This campaign operative who prompted Fernandez-Rundle’s withdrawal has not been identified. On Monday, Gimenez canceled his contract with Quantum Results after learning that it had hired an ex-convict, Gerardo Judas “Jerry” Ramos, who has a long history of convictions for fraud and other offenses.

ReplyDeleteJerry Ramos is a criminal by virtue of his convictions. But hiring him after he has served that sentence is not. And there's nothing to suggest Al Lorenzo or Jerry Ramos have done anything but run a clean campaign for their clients, which include many of the judicial and governmental candidates about to be voted for.
ReplyDeleteSomeone named Daisy Cabrera recently was accused of committing a crime about ballots, but there's no accusation any of that was done at the request or behest of Al Lorenzo, or anyone who works for him. Thus there's no proof of any involvement done by Al Lorenzo or Jerry Ramos that would connect them to those acts. Apparently Daisy is an operative in Hialeah who has her own 'consulting business'.
This is a complete red herring, an accusation and slander of a connection in crime between Al Lorenzo and Daisy Cabrera designed to throw mud on the walls and see what sticks. This is not Kathy's fault or doing and she is blameless. She also did the right thing in reaction to these revelations.
Complaints about Al Lorenzo, and thus Kathy and/or Gimenez,coming from people who are in bed with John Rivera and Michelle Spence-Jones, are worthless. Shame on them.

Kathy stated she seen this Jerry Ramos guy around previously so he is known to the campaign. Bottom line is he fraudulently obtained absentee ballots and this most likely isn't the first time just like there were more than 31 absentee ballots. Now why hasn't the Feds stepped in because this is corruption at it's ugliest in the hands of the powerful, whom we trust to do an honest job.
This goes to show that the old adage "Everything that's done in the dark will eventually come to the light."

I guess she got a little to lax and the time has come no matter how much money she has it can not replace her reputation in regards to the second probe of absentee ballot fraud on her campaign. It's time to say no to corruption and yes to integrity and the Law which we regrettably entrusted her to abide by.

Best election story in Dade this year is sitting with Supreme Court Justice Labarga as well as Former Justice Cantero at the CABA judicial luncheon and having candidate Alex Labora come to our table during desert to pass out his election cards (cheesy to say the least) and handing them all to Justice Labarga. It was painfully obvious he didn't know who he was or what Court he sat on.
