An era ends Friday as both Warren Schwartz and his lovely wife Marlene retire from the Dade PDs office.
It wasn't quite as far back as Teddy Roosevelt taking the oath of office for President, but it might seem that long to REGJB denizens, most of whom cannot remember a time when Warren was not a PD.
It's been a long and distinguished career and when the whistle sounds at 5:00 p.m. Friday, PDs and ASAs and Judges and friends will gather at Finnegans On the River to hoist a few and say goodbye. Gentle readers of this blog should come by and do the same.
Every February 22nd (within a day or so, trial schedule permitting) for the last five years, we go to Jerry's Deli and order two tongue sandwiches. The waitress always gives us a strange look because we are dining alone. Yet we insist on two separate sandwiches on separate plates. We eat one, down a cream soda, munch a pickle and leave, ignoring the strange looks and/or comments the waitress gives us as she eyes the untouched sandwich.
Why have we done this every year since 2007?
Because the last time Justice Clarence Thomas asked a question or made a comment from the bench during oral argument was February 22nd, 2006.
Happy anniversary Justice Thomas. Shhhhssshh.
Lets see in June who is quiet and who is not. And if you want your comment posted, maybe you shouldn't call me names. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to both Warren and Marlene. When I was a prosecutor I handled cases involving each of them.........they both are honorable people who cared about their clients. I wish them the best and hope they enjoy their retirement.

hysterical post! (though this fascination with Thomas staying quiet in arguments is silly. I like a judge who listens to my arguments. Given all the other judges on that bench who don't, I understand Thomas deciding not to add to the noise. He is still wrong 90% of the time, but not on this silly issue)
ReplyDeleteWell with Warren leaving and Judge Gelber retired the only bow wearing attorney left in REG building is Phil Maniaty. Best of luck to Warren enjoy your retirement.
ReplyDeleteIt won't be the same without uncle warren....,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to both Warren and Marlene. Welcome to the private defense bar Warren!! You are a welcome addition and we all look forward to working with you!!

And yet you can't stop obsessively reading the blog and the comments. Thanks for your support.
ReplyDeleteBozo the blogger. A/k/a Rumpole
Sounds like something having to do with the NBA playoffs Horace.
ReplyDeleteLooked like a great game last night; sorry I couldn't be there in person with you. Out West at my favorite mountain in the Sierra Nevadas, you know which one, where the weather is 40 degrees, light winds, not a whole lot of snow, only about a four foot base, but enough to have a good time on the slopes.
The Heat did look good and those Knicks really stuck up the place in the second half.
Cap Out ...
I love your blog, so no problem. Facts are facts, though. Thanks for keeping quiet about that "team" from New York. Comical.
ReplyDeleteWrong re the bow tie - Anthony Britt - bow tie wearing, voir dire excelling (he can memorize a panel of 45+), ass kicking trial lawyer.
ReplyDeleteI too wish Warren and Marlene well. They are nice people.
ReplyDeleteHappy retirement to both of you.
Actually look at my tweets during the game ( listed on the side of the blog). The Knicks got their ass kicked, the Heat played outstanding defense (for once) and Lin was worse than awful. That being said I will bet on any mediocre team that plays team ball over this colllection if spoiled superstars in a finals series. They may get that far, but they will lose.
ReplyDeleteSince when does Carmelo Anthony fit into "team" basketball? He holds the ball for at least 9 seconds every time he gets a pass and Denver, as a "team" improved exponentionally after he was traded to your over-hyped, under 500 New York Knicks. The stats don't lie--the Heat have been playing some of the best team defense in the NBA this year.
ReplyDeleteOur very own Judge Scola. He was awesome in family court.

If the Heat continue to play defense the way they did Thur night they will be very very hard to beat. But if "ifs" and "buts" were cans of nuts....
