WELCOME BACK

Summer is officially over. Now a quick slog to the holidays and then the end of the year. We have a few trials set, so we will be busy.

The suicide pool is shaping up. If you haven't received an email from us at fbpool12 at gmail then you are NOT in. To register send an email to that address, not our regular address, with the phrase "Joel Brown makes me frown" in the subject line. We will respond and confirm that you are in. Miguel De La Over, Feet of Clay Kaiser, Kenny Weisman, Robert Kuntz, Marshall Dore Louis, BDTD, Nick Basso, Adam T2, Michael Grieco, former Judge Jon Colby, and Shumie's Cigar headline an all star field of lawyers vying for the prestigious title this year.

A word about football picks: For years now we have astounded the touts and critics by posting public picks and winning at a rate no other public tout can approach. Alas, many things come to an end, and we cannot promise that we will be posting football picks every week this year. First, we have some important matters to attend to. Second, our inside source in these matters- 52nd Street Irwin will not be available for another 16 months or so, if you get our meaning.
Third, it's just not something we cannot guarantee we will do every week this season.

NEW HIRES: at the PD and SAO. We haven't forgotten you. Hang in there, your post is coming.

"Sandy, Baby": SCOTUS blog reports that Justice O'Connor recently sat on the 9th Circuit in Montana at a special session held at a law school. The Justice then addressed the students afterwards. We're a big fan of appellate courts holding sessions outside of their normal courthouses. It brings the law to the people. We once argued a nasty case before an appellate court which held session at a high school and you could see the minds of the students engaging by what they saw and heard. It only takes one special experience to set a young person on the road to a career (which is why we strongly recommend educators limit their charges access to attorneys and judges -especially the latter.)

We're in court today. Are you?

  1. YOu have had a stellar legal career, and saved some of that hard earned cash. Your investments are well ahead of the S&P. Football picks will make you a few grand for spending on those little extras. The blog is being purchased by Google for an undisclosed amount.

    Any thoughts of retirement, Rump?

  3. Did anyone watch the Republicans from S. Carolina yesterday? The` "Lawyer Class" is under attack. The courts must be rained back. They are supposed to be the weaker branch of Gov't and can or should only decide disputes between people and enforse the crim law. From Bachmann to Gingrich the idea that the Supreme Ct could declare an act unconstutional was rejected. An Constitutional Admendment to over turn Marbury v Madison? Quoting Jefferson in 1802 and Hamilton in the Federalist papers Gingrich out right declared war on the Courts. Be WARE this crop of Republican Candidates hate the Court and Lawyers.
    They scare me.

  7. for an office that represents thousands on indigent people per year remarkably little is known of the conflict office. its webcite is perenially under construction, one cannot easily obtain the names of the attorneys and thereby look up how long they have been a member of the bar, or obtain basic information about the operation of the office. has mr. george learned or practiced any criminal law since obtaining the office 4 years ago, is there an adequate law library and training materials as at the pd and sao and why fire an experienced criminal defense attorney unless it is simply because he is interviewing on oct.14th for george's job which he should have accepted as long gone when rather than recommend his reappointment the jnc reopened the application process and now has 15 people to consider other than a probate lawyer!

  9. It is my understanding that Joe George fired both Eugene Zenobi and Kellie Peterson today for absolutely no cause. I can see where retaliation came Mr. Zenobi's way for applying for Mr. George's job (not that I think it is ok by any means), but can't see where or why Ms. Peterson would have been fired. These are both excellent, dedicated lawyers with stellar reputations. It will be interesting to see what happens in court on every case these two lawyers are currently handling and whether there will be any more firings coming down the pike.

  11. Rumpole, you know da reason why you ain't doin' football picks no more is because you owe me big time cash and yous don't want to sleep with the fishes. Be careful or Guido, Sal, Big Tony and I will fit you with a custom pair of concrete shoes..........capice?

  12. Joe George is an idiot. We all know that. And to fire a great.attorney like Kellie just proves what a moron he is

Zenobi should be appointed and re hire Kellie. Joe should be delivering pizzas

  13. Seriously. What is the deal? Let's give some publicity to Gene. He would be a good leader for the office. For starters he is actually a criminal defense lawyer.

  14. I suspect that Joe George fired Gene and Kellie merely in order to save money. The only chance he has at being reappointed is by making tremendous cuts in expenditures. Neither the governor nor the legislature gives a rats ass about quality representation for indigent defendants.

  15. 7:34 - "The courts must be rained back." What does that mean? Is our judicial system dependent upon the weather?

  16. Joe - leave the lawyering to the big boys n girls. The sooner you're out of that office the better

  17. DS----We agree! Any ideology taken to an extreme is absurd. I'm not surprised you see it that way (despite the initial comment on unions). Too bad so many others don't.

I'm sure we have different opinions on where the line gets drawn, but reasonable minds can disagree and there's no right answer. I sure wish the politicians got that (and for the ones that do, I wish they'd be honest about it, acknowledge it, and work from that standpoint to compromise).

  18. what percentage of the conflict office's work is death penalty litigation and how much of the budget does it eat up?

  19. Just heard that Joe George fired Rene Palomino. What the hell is going on with this guy? At the rate he's going, there will be no decent lawyers left in the criminal division.

  20. Joe George does not know how to run the office. Not only that, management there does know how to manage, always firing people because of their budget. I hope this comes back to bite Joe in the A**!!!! Eugene Zenobi and Kellie Peterson are GREAT attorneys!!! Engene Zenboi has my vote any day for Regional Counsel, I whole heartily believe he will effectively turn the office around in a positive and productive way!!! He actually cares for the people who work there unlike Joe George and his management team!!
