GOODBYE SUMMER

The passing of August has not gone unnoticed by the author of this humble blog.
Summer is a real nuisance, as the sultry and thick humidity serves to wreck any suit a well attired lawyer may wear. The walk from the parking lot to the car is usually enough to have us longing for our morning shower.

The end of summer also means certain changes to our daily libations. Rum and gin are out, and bourbon is in. Tequilla as any true friend of Rumpole knows, never goes out of style.

The end of August also means we enter the most precarious time hurricane wise.
Indeed, evacuations have been ordered for the Carolina barrier islands in anticipation of Earl. Beyond the havoc that Earl may wreck, thousands of small businesses also face the loss of Labor Day weekend income, which for seasonal businesses is as important as Black Friday is for retailers. We wish our neighbors to the north well, all the while admitting to a certain schadenfreude (the link is for our robed readers if they need a definition) and relief we are not boarding up.

Condolences: Heartfelt condolences were being freely expressed in the hallways today of the sudden and tragic passing of Circuit Judge Maxine Cohen-Lando's dear husband. This was unexpected and very sad and we send our very best to a dear woman who must be beside herself with grief. Death is a part of life, but still.....There is an unmistakable and intense sweetness to sharing a life with a spouse. And a part of you dies when that spouse dies.

There's a service tomorrow (Thursday September 2, 2010) at Mt. Nebo Synagogue, in Kendall @2pm.

  1. I've tried to speak with you about this Rumpole, but you turn a deaf ear.

Blog revenues are down, expenses are up, you pay no attention to the bottom line. You must institute the changes we discussed. Impose the user fee, cut back on staff, raise money and lower costs.

Plus- the feds are all over the Scatino bust out and your fingerprints are all over it.

    We need to talk.

  2. God bless you Max; know that you are loved and we are here for you.

PS----for those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Maxine is one of the best judges to ever grace the RGB. Smart, honest and, above all, fair, she is everything a judge should be. More importantly, she is a wonderful, caring and compassionate person who has served as mentor to many a young lawyer.

  4. How did the rocket get pre-trial release, isn't everyone charged by the feds an escape risk, a danger to the community? maybe his race is the factor? Pre-trial release in federal court no longer is a right you can assume for your clients. Every sitting magistrate ruling on pre-trial release issues is a pawn of the Government. They are not part of the third branch of government. The are nominated every four years, and this fact makes them less independent!

  8. THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

I last saw Max and Michael at the FACDL dinner in late April. They looked great together and Max could not have been happier.

My personal condolences to her, Rachel, Sari and the rest of the family.

    (from the Miami Herald)

GILL, MICHAEL RAYMOND, born July 2, 1949, of Miami, Florida, died unexpectedly at home, on August 31, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Judge Maxine Cohen Lando, father of Tracy Sysk, Mark Gill, April Walton, Daniel Gill; stepfather of Rachel and Sari Lando; brother of Janice Gill Gordillo; uncle of Christopher and Nicole Gordillo; grandfather of seven loving grandchildren. He was pre- deceased by his parents, Sylvia and Michael B. Gill. Michael was a dedicated Critical Care nurse at several distinguished Miami hospitals. His patients, and their families always appreciated his kindness and patience at the most difficult of times. He earned his professional degree, and B.S., from Florida A. & M. University, Tallahassee, Florida. Maxine and Michael met while both were students at Coral Gables High School in the 1960's. They were both members of Temple Bet Shira. During his marriage to Maxine, they lived life intensely, traveled throughout the world, and he perfected downhill skiing. Michael was an avid ping pong player, and a persistent jogger. He loved the roar of loud motorcycles, the faster the better! Michael also cut quite an elegant figure on a dance floor. He embraced life with passion, integrity and love. We will miss him unto eternity. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Bet Shira Synagogue, University of Miami Chabad or American Diabetes Foundation. Services will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2010 in the afternoon. Arrangements handled by Riverside Gordon Funeral Home. View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

  9. Unfortunately Rosh Hashunah and the New Year in general will never have the same meaning again for Max and her family. Keep your faith Max. It will guide you and give you comfort during these difficult days. It helped me and it will help you.

I will say a special Kaddish for Michael at Shabbat services this weekend. God keep you and grant you peace. Shalom
