GOAAAAALLLL!!

Spain capped off a wonderful world cup with an exciting one-nil will over The Netherlands. It was a well played match.

Things ratchet down a little this week as two very difficult murder trials came to conclusions in phase one of the cases last week. Congrats to the prosecution teams in both cases. We know Abbe Rifkin was her normal professional best in the case before Judge Scola. Anyone want to email us the entire ASA team on the Cardona case so we can give everyone their due?

If you want to know where to get a great piece of pizza in Miami read the comments from this weekend's post.

If you're having a tough day and need a few minutes to calm down and press the reset button, we suggest you get yourself a copy of Andrea Bocelli's Romanza and listen to the classic Con Te Partiro a few times. It works.

Keep cool.

  1. thanks for the kudos to the prosecutors who got the 2 guilty verdicts last week-- i take exception to the armchair analysis of giving up diet soda so the body can "turn its attention" to burning fat... i do not disagree with you about the potential harm of artificial sweeteners and chemicals, but the process of burning fat has nothing to do with the "body paying attention" to those additives-- it is merely a funvtion of caloric intake and metabolization by burning those calories--the calories function as fuel and exercise uses the fuel no matter how many additives are floating around in your blood stream and digestive system

  2. THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

"exciting one-nil [win]" .. you and I were watching two different games Rumpy.

And I am not the only one who thought the game was a snoozer. From ESPN.com:

This was supposed to be a stylish World Cup. Instead, we got substance. Ugly substance, at that.

Spain was a team that didn't really wow throughout the tournament. This was not a glamour team.

It was a difficult road for the Spanish. They scored eight goals in this entire tournament. Eight! No other World Cup winner had scored fewer goals.

    Substance over style.

They frustrated the Dutch, who showed their ugly side on multiple fouls. There were 14 yellow cards assessed, the most ever in a final, and it played into Spain's hands.

And just when the crowd was strangely quiet, when you couldn't tell if it was vuvuzelas blowing or people snoring, when there was a worldwide frustration at watching these two teams sail strikes everywhere but the net ...

There will be a lot of complaining today about the final, which other than a few special minutes lacked the sizzle and tension that one hopes for in a game of this magnitude.

    .....

The 3rd place game between Uruguay and Germany was a much more exciting game. But the Spainards won it their way and they hold the cup for the next four years.

    See you in Brazil 2014.

    Cap Out ....

  3. I saw the "Barefoot Bandit's" lawyer on the Today Show this morning and don't know whether to feel good or bad about it. I feel bad that any lawyer could be stupid enough to call a series of home burglaries and airplane/motorboat thefts "harmless property crimes" and somehow believe that he is going to be able to consolidate all of the charges in a Seattle federal court. On the other hand, I feel good that the scumbag defendant is almost guaranteed to get at least 20 years in various state and federal prisons with this idiot as his lawyer. By the way, the Bandit may want to start wearing shoes, while he waits in filthy, overcrowded Fox Hill Prison for the Bahamian authorities to try him on the burglaries and thefts that he committed there.

  7. Rumpole, in light of your warning to stay out of the stock market except for shorts or puts, what about investing in gold and silver? I'm sick of practicing law and want to retire in a few if possible.

  10. Tamara Gray would be a horrible Judge. Just a bleeding heart with no legal knowledge or skills. I'd rather have the oracle octopus.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree. Tamara Grey is not qualified to be a judge. She has been at the public defender's office for 15 years and has never once fist chaired a jury trial. Most people who work there confuse her for a social worker. The JNC should better vet the applicants. Mr. Johnson is by far the most qualified of the six names going up. Its not a contest..

  12. Rump, Monica Gordo gets the Herald endorsement...

    "MIAMI-DADE CIRCUIT COURT
    GROUP 62
Miami-Dade voters have two strong judicial candidates running for an open seat in Group 62 of the 11th Judicial Circuit.
Robert J. Kuntz, Jr., 50, is a former journalist who graduated from the University of Miami law school in 1996. He practices commercial litigation, with an emphasis on aviation. He has tried some jury trials in state and federal court, as well as before immigration judges.
Monica Gordo, 35, also graduated from the University of Miami and has worked as a prosecutor since 1999. Like Mr. Kuntz, Ms. Gordo earned high marks from her peers in the Dade County Bar Association poll of candidates. Her experience in the courtroom is vast, ranging from DUI and juvenile division prosecutions to robberies, sexual battery and murder cases. Among them: the successful prosecution of Damon ``Red Rock'' Darling, who was handed a 50-year sentence last year in the 2006 death of 9-year-old Sherdavia Jenkins, killed by Darling's AK-47 while she played with a doll in her front yard.
Ms. Gordo's trial experience gives her the edge in this race. In a court system that's packed with cases, she will hit the job running.
As felony division chief, Ms. Gordo handled homicides and supervised 20 lawyers in the state attorney's office. She now serves on the Gang Strike Force, investigating and prosecuting street gangs involved in homicides and other violent crimes.
For Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Group 62, The Miami Herald recommends MONICA GORDO."

  13. Charlie Johnson is far and away the best candidate for this job. Tamara Gray has no business getting her name to the governor

  14. Not many goals were scored during the entire World Cup game- must be the fewest ever.
