you're taking one down; you sing a sad song just to turn it around;
you say you don't know; you tell me don't lie
you work at a smile and you go for a ride

you had a bad day
The camera don't lie
you're coming back down and you really don't mind
you had a bad day.

BUT THANKS FOR A MEMORABLE SEASON DOLPHINS!

RUMPOLE NOTES: We didn't say this first, but it's true: DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

We received this comment yesterday in response to our pick of the Cardinals over the Falcons:

Anonymous said...
Rumpole, have you been smoking pot with Ricky Williams again? Your Cardinals pick borders on the insane. They are in the playoffs only because they won a lame division by default. Atlanta may be young, but they have talent.

Rumpole responds: This is a great example of why gaming should be left to the professionals. A football fan like our dear reader watches some games, sees that the Falcons are the "hot" team and cannot believe Rumpole is picking against them. Our fan knows not the heuristic algorithms we employ for analyzing the hundreds of variables present in any sporting contest. Our fan has little understanding of the "regression to the mean analysis" ( (c) Rumpole 2008) that we have successfully employed this season. And if you had any doubts about the theory, boy did it work with Arizona yesterday. They were not as bad as everyone thought, and Atlanta was just not as good. Great move by coach Whiz to come out running. He's one of the best in the game.

Our fan is in fact the reason why most bookies drive Porches and our fan is the reason why a well placed bet on Arizona paid for most of our December in our winter blogger's retreat high in the Sierra Nevada mountains.   So please dear fan, just keep on following those hot and popular teams and ignore our advice. We're richer for it. And we mean that.

Just how many more times will we be writing "Can you believe the Dolphins are playing a meaningful game this late in the season?"

Yesterday everyone was jumping on the Falcons bandwagon. But we knew differently. Today everybody is jumping on the Eagles Bandwagon, which we started last week.  The Eagles are a two point favourite on the road today in Minnesota.  Lay the points and take the Eagles on the road. This team is hot and knows how to win.  Take away Adrian Peterson and what do you have with Minnesota? A team that desperately needs a QB.
Eagles -2 +200.

The Dolphins are three point underdogs at home.

Don't let the sixth seed rating fool you. These Ravens are for real. They are the hardest hitting team in the NFL bar none. They have two of the best (if not the best) defensive players in the NFL in Ray Lewis and Ed Reed and we have not even mentioned Dolphin killer Terrell Suggs.

Oh how we want to tell you that these Dolphins have changed from the last time the Ravens came here and whupped them. They have matured and gotten better. But not enough. We cannot recommend the Dolphins +3. We will be at the stadium in a private box rooting for out Fins. And they can win. Pennington has shown he is the master at managing a game plan. But these Ravens have a brutal defense and a for real QB that has lit up the NFL over the last 8 games. Plus they have a real chip on their shoulder. They believe they should be AFC North Champions and they want another shot at the Steelers.  Anger has fueled many a late season playoff run.

Ravens -3 +100.

Keep you eye on the weather. If that cold front and rain moves in like it is supposed to,  jump hard on the under 37 tonight before the rest of the (mopes) fans like our friend from the comment section wakes up in the morning and takes the over.

We cannot fulfill our promise of picking the Super Bowl winner today due to events beyond our control. When some of the injury reports are updated, we will have a better idea of where we stand.

  3. RUMPOLE - is it true that you ordered several "Snuggie" blankets from the tv offer? Will you bring them if you go to a certain playoff game up north?

  6. Why has the world not offered safe passage to the women and children of Gaza? If, as Omert has said that this crisis was unavoidable, why were the women and children not permitted to leave before the bombing began or even now as the onslaught of ground war is occurring? The women and children of Gaza should have been offered the opportunity of refugee status until Hamas is quashed. THey should be alowed to leave NOW! The world views the Palestinians as less than human. Other peoples in the past have been viewed as the same. The women and children should not be subject to the horror of war. No country has even been asked to take them in. Obama and Clinton should ask the Saudis, the Kuwaties, the Shieks of the UAR, the Iranians, and the rest of the Arab world to offerthe women and children of Palestine refugee status. Let's hear what they say. Maybe the US should take in a few hundred children, as we did during "Pedro Pan." Sadly, Obama, who has had plenty to say about Gov Blogovitch, the seating of Senator-appointed Burris, the handouts to the UAW, GM, Chrysler, AIG, Goldman Sachs, Wall Street banks, and anyone else who contributed to his campaign, will do nothing and say nothing. He proported himself as the one who would talk to everyone. Now he and his mouthpieces relies on the lame response "there is nly one POTUS at a time." The world has said "never again." Well guess what, its happening, again.

  8. Rump, that was my comment you posted, and you were right about Arizona. But you were wrong (as was I) in taking Indy. So with the vig, you're down 20 Ricky Williams yesterday.

I like your picks for today, but am far more confident with the Ravens -3. Philly has been playing well lately and they have some potentially explosive players. Minnesota needs a QB. But they have Adrian Peterson, a solid D and a great young tight end.

  9. Rump, its Fake Pannunzio, your Dolphins sideline reporter. Here at the stadium, it's all tied up. The brews are cold, the babes are tasty, and the crowd is loud.

    Fake Pannunzio out for now.

why do you care so much? i mean, the fins are about to start and all you can do is make outlandish nazi germany comparisons.

  12. 12:05..........get a clue. The women and children witness war every day courtesy of their fathers and brothers. In fact, female suicide bombers are not an anomaly. Stop assuming other people fight the way we do....they don't. Children served in the Iranian and Iraqi armies. Now they're serving Hamas. Stop kidding yourself.

The fact is that these people hate Israel and are committed to it's destruction, not peace. They've been saying that since 1948. Take off your rose colored glasses and read a little.

  13. Rumpola- for the last time of this 2008 season, and until pre-season August 2009, from the Jay WHite sponsored RICK WEAVER Memorial Post Game Parking lot party, this is your Dolphin sideline Correspondent, Fake Pannunzio, saying

AND THAT'S ANOTHER MIAMI DOLPHINS FIRST DOWN.!!!!!!!

  14. And neither did we say it "first" (about defense wins championsips); but we did say this a week ago:

"Ravens are a lock next weekend. Both teams are 11-5. Of the 11 Dolphin wins, only one versus a playoff team -Chargers, early in the season.

Ravens beat two playoffs teams and beat both of them bad - Fins and your cheesesteak Eagles.

But a more telling stat is the five loses:

Fins lose to two playoff teams: Arizona and Ravens.

Ravens lose their five to two number one seeds (Giants and Titans); two number two seeds (Steelers twice); and the hottest team entering the playoffs - the Colts.

Defense wins championships and the Ravens have a better D and with Flacco looking like a real QB now, they could go far into this playoff tournament."

    Captain Out ....

  16. Rumors are there have been a number of layoffs at the SAO this past week due to budget cuts - i know of at least one who was laid off due to this very reason.

Any idea as to how many (if any others) were laid off?

Bad sign as the state leg is about to go back into session to address budget shortfalls.

I wonder if any of them will get any part of that COLA that other workers around the state just got (since most earn above the min wage - though just barely)

  17. Not Palestinian. Not Israeli.
    And therefore, not interested.

I'm only 38 years old and it seems as if this fighting has been going on as long as I can remember. With no end in sight.

Any reason why I should care about people that are forever resigned to kill each other 10,000 miles away? I'd much rather feel for the people in this country that die everyday from lack of proper medical care.

  18. 12:05...........One more thing smart guy, Hamas assumed control of Gaza after winning an election. Everyone knew they were terrorists long before the election, but they won anyway. What's that tell you?

To paraphrase Golda Meir, peace will not happen until the fundamentalists love their children more than they hate Israelis and Jews.

PS----did you read the Herald article detailing the death of a Hamas leader? One thing that you should've picked up on............he previously sent his son to his death as a suicide bomber. These are the innocents? We can't even fathom their hate or priorities.

  19. THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

Rumpole: interesting issue before the Court on Anonymous Blogging:

To unmask, or not to unmask. That's the issue before Maryland's high court as it considers anonymity on the Internet, a subject with which numerous courts have grappled as trash talk, criticism and negative comments flood chatrooms, blogs and message boards. Judges are trying to balance the First Amendment rights of online users to post comments freely without fear of repercussions, against the rights of defamed or injured parties to confront their assailants and remedy their injuries.

    And Horace:

When are you going to correct your math from two weeks ago - you are up, but not that much!?
