Field Of Dreams.
The one Public Defender constant besides Bennett Brummer has been his executive assistant: David Weed. Last seen handling a courtroom division when James Earl Carter was President (1976), last week in an email Bennett Brummer thanked David Weed for 32 years of service as his executive assistant.
And then he was out.
With a handshake, a pat on the back, an email, and a fairly substantial salary for a public servant, Weed has been "Weeded out" as the executive assistant to the Public Defender.
Next stop? (deep breath) "Senior Attorney supervising the Early Representation Unit for PD clients who are not in custody." (He's getting paid by the letters in his job description.) For all you new PDs in county court, let this be a lesson to you. If you work hard and try cases, and stay in the office until at least 3:00 PM, maybe someday you too can be appointed to that exalted position: " Senior Trial Attorney Supervising the ERU." That's what you went to law school for, right?
Hottest PD Rumor? Bennett Brummer is out, but just how far is he out? Not that far. Maybe. The PDs are buzzing over the rumor that Brummer will be renting office space on 14th Avenue and will be hired by PD office as a "consultant."
Your tax dollars at work. Maybe.
5TH DCA TO CRIST: DROP DEAD.
Ohhh we have a good old southern brouhaha here in Florida. You will remember the article linked on the blog last week where Governor Crist sent the list of nominees for a spot on the 5th DCA back to the JNC. JNC Chairman James Fallace has sent the same list back to Crist. The article is here.
We had a nice bounce back yesterday winning the Titans over the Brownies (+125); The Giants/Eagles Under 44.5 (an easy +200); the Dolphins +1 (+100) and the Under 42 Steelers/Cowpokes (+200) for a whopping +625. We lost our Pack over the Texans for a -165 for a total on the day of +460 and a season total of 839. Nice piece of change for a days work.
PS. It was 59 degrees at 5:00 AM this morning.
See you in court wearing my sweater.
And that"s another MIAMI DOLPHINS FIRST DOWN!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst comment about FIRST PLACE DOLPHINS.
Next thing you know, Bonnie "the plumber" Riley will be given Weed's position.
ReplyDeleteBut instead of giving him a new list, a nominating commission of Central Florida lawyers took the unorthodox step of telling the governor to, in effect, pound sand.
ReplyDeleteDoes Weed take a pay cut? Coz the PD could hire 4 lawyers for what Weed was getting paid. And don't gimme that BS about how much he could make in the private sector - the guy hasn't handled a caseload since Carter!!!
ReplyDeleteMemo to Harvey Ruvin: Why is the clerks web page down at least once a day ( at least it works better than the copy machine at the clerks office).
ReplyDeleteMemo to Rump: Im sure that was a nice piece on CD Weed but all I could see was an ad for Desert Tank Mission.
Way to think that through
And Brummer for consultant?!?!?
ReplyDeleteExcuse me Mr. Brummer, I need to consult with you as to what time is a good time to take a nap in the midle of the day.
How many PDs could they hire with his consultant's fees?
With Weed gone, left to lead is RORY STEIN. A legend in his own mind. A man with a love/hate relationship with himself.
ReplyDeleteStay till 3pm? That's like torture, dude!

Weed is a puppet master. He makes 235k per year heading up e.r.u. by day and works as a c.i.a. operative by night. He is a poet warrior in a classic sense. Respect weed, love weed, smoke weed.
ReplyDeleteCarl Rove
One of the candidates is currently chief judge of a circuit and black? If so I find that compelling that the other judges found this judge qualified enough to vote him/her chief judge. So why not qualified for the 5th dca?
ReplyDeleteJudge Bagley throws his hat in the ring for Chief Judge.
ReplyDelete8:28,
ReplyDeleteThe sun goes down once a day.
The clerk's office site never seems to work.
But, now that Mr Ruvin has another couple of years, no reason to fix it.
And have you ever tried to get through on the phone to a live person at the clerk's office? HA.
Don't worry about "the frog". He will land on his feet.through his watch the pd office has prospered. and watching him pick a jury is an amazing thing to 0bseve.
ReplyDeleteFor those who rocked out with the first place Dolphins. I salute you.!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd indeed, that's another Miami Dolphins FIRST DOWN!!!!!
rump - you say that "one thing ever constant is BASEBALL"...
ReplyDeletenot anymore - the breaking news is that the CHICAGO CUBS are in bankruptcy as a result of their parent company tribune going chapter 11. more to come.
But but but what do you mean that the clerks office's website doesn't work. Remember Harvey ran on the fact that they are using technology to make things better! It couldn't really be that the website is terrible or the copy machines downtown didn't want to take my paper money last week and I was told to "go to a bank" to get change for a copy card. No, this cannot be true!
ReplyDeleteThat office is a joke compared to the Federal system and CM/ECF.
Interesting. If you look Bennett Brummer up on the Florida Bar website, it shows his address as:
ReplyDelete603 W 115th St
New York, New York 10025-7722
Well, Sammy, I didn't say it-the guy who wrote Field Of Dreams said it.
ReplyDeleteField of Dreams is the one movie that guarantees to make me cry every time I watch it at the end when Ray says "You want to have a catch Dad?" I just lose it every time.
Getting raised in the NE and being a baseball fanatic does that to a guy,
It's 5 to 5. I'm calling the Shum. I'm beat. Tough Monday. Isn't everyone supposed to be on Holiday these weeks? Geeze.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if BHB will show up more to work as a consultant than he does now.
ReplyDeleteUmmm (chomp chomp) ahhh it"s sixteen days before Christmas eve, and even less (smack) shopping days, and uh, its Monday, so uhh (chomp smack) if that's not a reason for a state charged continuance, I don't know what is.
ReplyDeleteFirst there was no money for new attorneys, then there was no money for staff raises, then they sued to reduce the caseloads. Now today we find out the previous PD, B. Brummer, and D. Weed, instead of leaving, are remaining on the payroll with their bloated salaries beyond their 30+ year tenure doing who knows what. What next? R. Stein as librarian? It is hypocritical and piggish to proclaim to the legislature, the courts and their staff that there is no money for anything while retaining dozens of overpaid staffers with grandiose job descriptions who do zilch. This begs the question: Did Mr. Martinez enter into a Faustian bargain with these staffers to perpetuate them in their "jobs" in exchange for his nomination? Sure looks like it. See you in 2012.
ReplyDeletewhat to but rumpole for christmas? what address do i use to mail the gift?
ReplyDeleteBill Barzee is Rory Stein's illegitimate son. - You read it here first.
ReplyDeleteDear Rumpole;
ReplyDeleteHaving noticed your recent preoccupation with weather I thought I would give you the link to the weather forecast by my neighbor in Colorado.

The high today was 20.9
Bonnie no longer works at the PD, she's working for AJ Barranco
