BRRRRRrr

Dolphins lost, but Rumpole had a winning week courtesy of the leg and foot of the Colts kicker.

A cold front is coming  through Tuesday evening dropping temperatures for Turkey day into the high 40's.

Three day week in the REGJB and yet a full slate of trials. Anyone going to trial? Should trials be set during holiday weeks like this?

Here's a problem you don't want in space: problems with the urine conversion system.

The Broward blog continues its excellent reporting  that despite the fact that Broward leads the state on sending first offenders to prison, crime is rising in Broward and falling in other counties.

And finally, everyone's favourite federal blogger was in Hollywood hobnobbing with federal judges and showing off his new Blackberry to less than stellar results.

See You In Court.

  1. LOL. No offense, but.........the Broward blog's comments on the crime rates are ridiculous (I can't believe you called it "excellent reporting"). In a nutshell, he claims that the Broward SAO is increasing crime by incarcerating people at a higher rate than Miami-Dade and Palm Beach. This is an abusrd argument based on very little data. These kind of inferences create all sorts of confusion. As anybody with experience with statistics can tell you, it is improper to draw conclusions from data without (among many other things):

    1. Defining the issue (ie. how are we defining crime? How are we defining recidivism?);
    2. Identifying potential margins of error in the data collection, set and interpretation (ie. is the crime reporting rate the same in Broward as it is in Miami or Palm Beach?);
    3. Accounting for other variables (ie. treatment, population growth/migration, etc.);
    4. Determining whether any statistical differences are statistically significantly (a 1 point difference probably is not; it may even be within the margin of error);
    5. Determining whether the numbers reflect a cause and effect relationship.

    I can go on and on, but there's no point.

    I can also provide data from plenty of other jurisdictions that show exactly the opposite of what the cited stats allegedly show (in fact, I can make a good argument that crime dropped significantly over the past 10-15 years courtesy of the harsh laws you complain about all the time.......though I'd agree that we've gone to far with many of them).

    Excellent reporting? No. Just more sloppy analysis. I don't read the JAA Blog enough to know if this kind of stuff is atypical, but I'd expect more out of a learned man like you Rump.

  3. HELP ME HOWARD - should be changed to Help ME GO TO PRISON HOWARD.

    He needs to get some PD's with balls up there who will start announcing ready on everything and clog the system. A warrior PD can
    easily clog the system up there and
    make life so miserable for the State and Judges that they start making better offers.

    And yes some clients will still go to prison but the numbers would be
    less if they had a real fighter
    instead of someone more concerned with appearances.

    Only because I am ignorant on the subject, but does Miami have a PD that clogs the system?

  5. 5:47....... the truth is,, both Dade and Broward are WEAK at the administrative level. The best Public Defender's office in the state is Jacksonville. The PD up there tries homicide cases-he's the type of PD that breeds confidence of the rank and file

    On another note, did you all know that Abe Laeser is going private in January. It seems Cathy is not allowing certain lawyers who wish to work passed DROP to do so. I think old Abe can make the switch.

  9. Thats the thing about PDs and PAs--when they say it's all about their client and the Constitution they mean that it's all about themselves.

  10. 11:31 - the best PD office in the USA isn't in any State, it's in the District of Columbia.
