The day we were most frustrated about not being able to post was the day of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King. We recall the words of Senator Robert Kennedy. Scheduled to speak to a crowd in a largely black neighborhood, the crowd was not aware that Dr. King had been assassinated. The police were concerned and refused to accompany Robert Kennedy into the neighborhood. There had already been riots across the land. Kennedy went into that neighborhood virtually alone, and speaking from the heart and without notes, reminded the crowd that his own brother had been assassinated just a few years before by a white man as well. Robert Kennedy calmed Indianapolis, Indiana, and showed just what an amazing man he was. There were riots across the nation, but not in Indianapolis that night.
It was in many ways, his finest hour.
Even in our sleep
pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon on the heart
until in our own despair
against our will
comes wisdom through the grace of God.
Robert Kennedy, quoting the poet Aeschylus; April 4, 1968.
Click HERE for the You Tube video of Bobby Kennedy speaking to the crowd.
Right when the video starts before you see anything, you hear Bobby Kennedy asking an aide "do they know about Martin Luther King?"
We watch this video and listen to those words and we can't help but be overcome by sadness. These are words of a true leader. It's 1968. The worst of Vietnam is still ahead of us. You can't help but feel "What might have been" had Bobby Kennedy not been gunned down two months later.
Anyway, it's good to be back.
See you in Court.
Welcome back, Rumpy. I feel for you, what an absurd situation, glad you are over it and back to your usual whackin' at the powers that be.
ReplyDeleteJust in time for the Shumie hour of power.
ReplyDeleteDude. Tell me this is for real. You're freaking me out Rumpole dude.
ReplyDeleteWe're Backkkkkk ......
ReplyDeleteWhile you were gone, the JNC got 37names to replace Judge Mills Francis, Yvonne Colodny joined a Circuit Court race, and Migna is still unopposed.
T-Minus 23 days and counting until the deadline for filing.
CAPTAIN OUT .....
Hey Rump, now that you are back, any thoughts on Kansas' win in the tournament? How about them Marlins? Oh, and did you try out for the Manatees? You know, the new Marlins cheering squad?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and Welcome Back!!
ReplyDeleteOpen seats are just that:Open to all who wish to run for judicial office.
Incumbents who are good should not be opposed. Those judges who think its a part time position or who are not doing the job expected are and should be open to all challengers.
If Llorens was making 140 which I doubt, she must have wanted to work less time to work to return to Brummers office.Being a judge is not supposed to be a part time position.
Llorens neve
OMG! Rumpole's back. It's about time. I've been like, stressin at work without Rumpole.
ReplyDeleteMIGNA WILL REMAIN UNOPPOSED?
ReplyDeleteWHY?
B..E...C...A...U...S...E....
Miami loves Migna
Migna loves Miami
OH Governor Crist you will see
Miami Loves Migna
Migna loves Miami
she's be the best judge you'll ever see.

THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:
ReplyDeleteYesterday, when I reported on Yvonne Colodny's filing in Group 19, I did not mention that she has been a member of The Florida Bar for 9 years, she works at the Dade County Public Defender's Office and she is a member of the Florida Bar's 11th Circuit Grievance Committee.
CAPTAIN OUT .....
Colodny v.Sanchez Llorens would be appropriate. Why would Colodny file to be in three way race.
ReplyDeleteColodny has tried cases;Llorens suggests she has tried cases.
Both wish to be judges so let the better candidate be succesful in such a campaign bid.Oh yes!Who will Brummer back? That would be quite interesting would it not?
Keep your rights to the Migna song.Maybe you should start your own blog and see how many persons sign on.The Governor signed off as other have for this candidate.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Pat Kopco and Steve Millan worked at the State attorney's office and I know that Yvonne is a PD, but what I do not know is how long have Kopco and Millan been practicing and is Millan the same guy that ran against Francis Mill a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteI did not post a gratutious comment calling someone shifty and dishonest. In this age of Google searches, you need to support the opinion a little more.
ReplyDeleteSecond floor PD here. Glad you're back. Lots to tell you about.
ReplyDeleteNine years ain't enough, but it's good Colodny has actually tried cases.
ReplyDeleteWhich judicial candidates have never run a jury trial?
welcome back...
ReplyDelete-enjoyed the Kennedy piece and was struck by your word choice, it conveys how much these events, or times & places in history, still to this day impact yours n many people's lives...
I wasnt around for this particular time in american/ human history...but am def convinced of the profound way in which it, along w/ related events defined a generation.
would u agree that 9/11 is this generations where were u when kennedy was shot? [btw im away i switched kennedys in posing this question, intentionally so, and i am aware of the difference in events n stories] :)
Is that the same Bobby Kennedy who started his political career as a hatchet man for Joe McCarthy, covered up his role in the death of Marilyn Monroe, and authorized J. Edgar Hoover to conduct illegal wiretaps on Martin Luther King, the very man who he was eulogizing? Yeah, he would have made a great President.

Which of the three racially-mixed men would make the best President? Barack Obama says that he has the best judgment to set foreign policy because he went to Harvard. James Blake says he would have gone to Harvard after he was accepted, but his tennis career was a detour. Tiger Woods reminded the other two that he went to Stanford, his judgment is impeccable, and told them to shut up during his swing. All three of the men are well-liked by huge crowds.
ReplyDeleteMany have you have asked my opinion of the NCAA Championship Game.
ReplyDelete1) Kansas plays a total team game, and that mattered.
2) College basketball is perhaps the sport where coaching matters the most. Caliperi blew it. With Kansas down by three with 10 seconds left, you do not let Kansas get off a three point shot. You foul the guy before the shot and send him to the line. Then, to tie, the player has to: a) hit the first shot; b) miss the second; c) get the rebound; d) score a two point shot.
Very unlikely.
The coach blew it and to his credit he took the blame for it afterwards.
Very good game. Reminded me of G'town/ Villanova final.
Re: Jorge Cueto. A couple of years ago, when Jorge was obsessed with becoming a DC, the powers that be told him that he needed a homicide trial under his belt. So Jorge asked a DC friend of his to take him on a homicide trial. The DC, being an all around good guy, said sure, and took Jorge on his next homicide. I don't remember the facts of the case, but it wasn't a good one for the State. I think there was a self defense claim and the eyewitnesses may have been shady. All in all, your typical Miami murder case. Anyway, Jorge and the DC try the case and lose. Jorge panics. He thinks the loss will adversely affect his chances of becoming a DC (silly Jorge, the SAO powers that be never actually look to see which ASAs win and which ASAs lose). So Jorge goes and bad mouths the DC all around the building, including to the powers that be, telling anyone who will listen how his DC "friend" blew the case and what an awful trial attorney he is.
ReplyDeleteThis story is Jorge Cueto in a nutshell--the ambition, the phoniness, the willingness to sell out his friends. I'm not friends with Jorge. I don't talk to him. But I do know what he did to his DC "friend," and I've always thought it stunk. So I say to all of you out there sticking up for Cueto and calling those who have posted negative things about him hypocrites: Jorge is the real hypocrite.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the internet...damn Rumpole's back.
ReplyDeleteHey, we get it you don't like the man. Chill out. Your obsession with him is not healthy. Take a break, get laid, do something that will take your mind off of this. Hey, maybe you should tell everyone who you are so that they can get any thing you have to say directly from you and ask you questions. What do you have to fear? Get a life. Enough already.
ReplyDeleteYes, Steve Millan and Pat Kopco were ASAs in the mid 90's to probably about 2000. Yes, Millan ran in 2006 for a county court spot against Mills-Francis
ReplyDeletePat Kopco left the SAO and then concentrated her practice to Family Law. She is now Board Certified in Family Law. Pat was one of those "realistic" ASAs and knew how to resolve a case in a fair and reasonable manner. She was very well liked at the SAO and by all the judges she practiced in front of.
an excellent judge. Knows how to try a case,
The fact that 3 people in the SAO dont like Cueto is irrelevant to the idiot voters of miami dade county.
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely no way to justify velis wearing a robe.
So like someone said previously - why doesnt someone file against these 2?
Wimps.
nice piece on rfk. there are some better youtube videos actually showing him giving the speech. by the way, you left out what i think is an inportant word from the last line of the poem: the "awful" grace of God.
ReplyDeleteDear Rumpy:
ReplyDeleteSorry to have doubted your word and how appropo to come back reminding all the posters about the great words of Martin Luther King. I remember them, being possibly twice the age of some of the posters or just being literate. I watched a replay the other day, and his powers of oratory combined with a positive, uplifting message, were not only inspiring, but bring to mind inevitable comparisons with some who preach today. On a rare serious note, I am Della Street, aka Fake Anonymous.
Seriously, Colodny would be great. She is dedicated and a smart cookie. Yes, nine years isn't that long, but I rather someone nice, respectful, and knowledgable about criminal law then the alternatives already on the bench!
ReplyDeleteHere's an update on Mr. Friendly, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Friedman:
ReplyDeleteHe is running for re-election apparently just so he can retire and become a mediator. He is attending mediations with Wetherington, getting his training. Why in the world is he running, then?
Patricia Kopco was a state attorney starting in March of 1996
ReplyDeleteI think she was licensed just before that date. She's no nonsense and fair. She has worked in a government job (asa) and in private practice at a firm, and run her own office. She also worked for NBC for about 20 years. AND she's HOT!

Is David Schenkman a good attorney? a Good guy?

Effective immediately lawyer Jack Thompson becomes the thrid person I have banned from the blog.

WHY???? What did he do?
As a practicing lawyer, I am offended that you would use the honored adjective and professional title of "lawyer" to describe "Jack Thompson." Please don't ever do that again or I will have to come find you.
ReplyDeleteLet's just say he has worn out his welcome. He has other outlets for his filings, let him go there.
ReplyDeleteAnother crude way to put it is
"You don't sh$t where you eat."
I have been more than patient with him to give him his fair say in his battles, and he stabbed me in the back.
Do a poll. All in favor of keeping Thompson off this blog vote yes.
ReplyDeleteI vote yes.
He is a real mess.
1:27:00 pm, it was about time you banned JT.
ReplyDeleteThompson will stab you whenever it's most convenient for him to try. We rest assured you're aware of his tactics. Not like his antics here didn't travel to GP quickly.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how you: vindictive, mean spirited, hypocritical prostitutes defame any prosecutor who represents the community in an effective manner...It's better to celebrate the apathetic Assistants who would rather roll over, give you what you want, and B-line it to Monte's at 4:00 p.m. in lieu of considering the interests of the citizens of this metropolis.
ReplyDeleteBy the way....the most worthy adversaries (defense bar wise) don't engage in any of this tiresome nonsense. The defense lawyers who consistently walk their clients when the chips are down avoid the sanctimonious windbag vaudeville routine and laugh about their client's guilt while simultaneously bombarding ASAs with well thought out (not boiler plate) pleadings....
So spare us the personal attacks against ASAs who happen to give a damn and refuse to sell out this community to "please" your sense of what is "reasonable."
You are so damn annoying.
You know damn well that you don't want an ASA who is "reasonable." You want a spineless relatively new hire who: (1) doesn't possess an iota of sense of obligation to the People that he or she is sworn to protect, and (2) offers you a windfall as opposed to doing a little work and perhaps getting ready for a trial.
Stop your malicious whining and act like a lawyer.
Seeing that it's past Shumie time, its Alan Quintin Shuminer, so that means Shmuie is the Q, right?
ReplyDeleteOh Rump, I could not figure out why you finally banned JT after months of his insane posting but a trip to the blog up north helped me out!
ReplyDeleteIt turns out that JT decided to file a complaint with the bar against Rump and the blog. It gets better folks! Crazy JT also mentioned the comments against Cueto! He mentioned specifically person that made a comment about Cueto attempting to become a DC and that the bar should proceed against that person as well!
Wow, Cueto, with JT in your corner, you cannot possibly lose!!!!! LOL! You have my vote!!!!!!
On a more serious note- I do not think anyone that posted comments about Cueto is really afraid to say the same to his face . I mean is he really someone to be feared.. .come on... think about people! But who wants a bar complaint for voicing an opinion from a crazy person? Better to remain anonymous!
Rumpole,
ReplyDeleteNow you know how it feels. Welcome to the club.
Ben, Dava, Barnaby, Steve, Larry, Ron, Sheila, Raoul, and Al.
"Hoaxes are cyclical in the world of the internet. We'll probably hear about a "global warming crisis" in another five years."
ReplyDelete- Mike Ross, Bailiff to County Court Judge Pooler, in an email sent to all court staff.
Hoaxes are indeed cyclical in the world of the internet. But Mr. Ross' stupidity will be memorialized as long as the internet lasts.
In the event Judge Dava-Tunis recommends disbarment of Thompson, where should we celebrate?
ReplyDeleteWell said, 5:10! Jodi Anton is a real prosecutor. Smart, dedicated, and fair. But being fair doesn't mean giving the house away to whiney defense attorneys. Being fair means also considering the interests of the people of Dade County to be free from crime, and specifically, in Jodi's case, means considering the right of the people of Dade County to be free from gun carrying career criminal robbers.
ReplyDeleteJodi should be running for judge, not these back slapping ignoramuses like Manny Segarra and Jorge Cueto .
"...and he stabbed me in the back."
ReplyDeleteIs he the reason the blog got shut down? Is he the crazy man you talked about?
Details...
I took down the comment about the prosecutor being "borderline" ethically. I have nothing to support that. It's a serious charge.

ReplyDelete@rumpole:
ReplyDeleteI realize that an "I told you so" and 2 bucks will get you uptown on an "A" train, but I do recall warning you that Jack would repay your kindness with a Bar complaint against you. It was just a matter of time.
