A murder in NYC outside the Palladium night club. Two men are arrested and convicted after trial.
Ten years later, an NBC producer is doing a story on the Bronx Homicide Task force, and he asks a detective if he takes his job home with him. The detective replies that he does not, except for one case that still keeps him up at night. So begins the long journey of NBC news producer Dan Slepian, who in 2002 takes that comment by the detective and investigates the conviction of two men, who by now almost everybody believes are innocent.
The forewoman of the jury saw an early part of the documentary and became convinced that she was involved in a “travesty of justice” that sent two innocent men to prison.
Read this quote from the NY Times Article HERE , and may we just say that we would not believe this if we didn’t read it ourselves:
One of the most dramatic moments in the documentary was filmed just a few months ago. On camera, Daniel Bibb, an assistant district attorney, said in an interview that he believed the men were innocent, even as he argued in court to keep them in prison — because, he said, he was under pressure to do so. Mr. Bibb did not return telephone calls seeking comment.
Rumpole says: This just can’t keep happening. Life is too precious. When are people who are given the responsibility for prosecution going to start taking responsibility for mistakes, and stop prosecuting innocent people? We are not saying it happens a lot, however, once is one time too many, and we have reported close to a dozen stories about this in the two years we have been writing the blog.
Enough is enough.
FAKE BLOGGER REVEALED
Something about this STORY, and we can’t really put our finger on what it is, caught our attention.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 5 — For the last 14 months, high-tech insiders have been eating up the work of an anonymous blogger who assumed the persona of Steven P. Jobs Apple's chief executive and one of the world’s most famous businessmen.
The mysterious writer has used his blog, the Secret Diary of Steve Jobs, to lampoon Mr. Jobs and his reputation as a difficult and egotistical leader, as well as to skewer other high-tech companies, tech journalists, venture capitalists, open-source software fanatics and Silicon Valley’s overall aura of excess.
The acerbic postings of “Fake Steve,” as he is known, have attracted a plugged-in readership — both the real Mr. Jobs and Bill Gates have acknowledged reading the blog fakesteve.blogspot.com. At the same time, Fake Steve has evaded the best efforts of Silicon Valley’s gossips to discover his real identity.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Daniel Lyons, a senior editor at Forbes magazine who lives near Boston, has been quietly enjoying the attention.
Rumpole says: and our number has dwindled by one.
See you in court, quietly enjoying the attention.
I'm waiting for the king of pomposity to comment on the prosecution story...c'mon Abe...

ReplyDeleteDid the JAC get funding for July?
Looking for Check
Dear Lost and Looking -
ReplyDeleteWord on the street is that office space is available for rent in the 2400 Building, South Dixie Hwy, where DUI master Bobby Reiff has his office.
achhh!!!! Stay away from the 2400 building. It is a ghost town. The building is up for sale- which is not a great thing for prospective clients to see. Most lawyers are fed up and on their way out to the new "Rico-Plex"- the criminal law suites on Brickell in a condo developed by Jose Quinon.
ReplyDeleteIn the Know.
who would want their office in a condo building??
ReplyDeleteRegarding the post today about the building at 2400 South Dixie where Bobbie Reiff is, it was just sold for $9.5 million last week. Sellers, Scott Leeds and Jon Colby own the building. They paid only $2 million three years ago. Talk about making money in real estate! It is a nice building, but not worth that kind of money.
ReplyDeleteWE HAVE $$$$$
ReplyDeleteYES; there is now money again for JAC Court Appointed Counsel cases. The money was released TODAY, August 6, 2007.
Of course, I spoke with Ms. Montenaro today (the Executive Director) and she expects that money to run our soon - so they are already in the process of preparing a presentation to the Senate Budget Committee for the release of more funds.
They are continuing to process all bills, so continue to send them in.
Also, do not forget about the 15% penalty that will kick in on August 24, 2007. Please get all your outstanding closed case bills into JAC before that date or you may suffer the consequence of a 15% penalty.

Sorry to take up space on the blog but I felt it necessary to respond to the posting above.
ReplyDeleteThe office space is on the top floor of the two-story 2400 Building, which I share with quality people like Hy Shapiro, Jay Hogan, Evelyn Greer, Ken White, Scott Fingerhut & Irv Lamel. It was built out with a fine cherry wood veneer (by Jose Quinon, no less) and the office rents are very reasonable. Ms. Greer negotiated a sub-market lease five years ago and that lease remains for another five years, not withstanding the recent sale of the building (for much less than stated above). There are 3-4 offices coming available so feel free to give Ms. Greer a call [305-854-8989] if you are interested.
Bobby Reiff
I posted on the unveiling of that blogger, too. Sneak a peek:

The 2400 building is a sinking ship. Jose Q (the federal Q???) is outta there. Andy "the hair" Boros is outta there. Colby and Leeds are outta there. Paris too. That building sale is nuttin but trouble with a capital T that rhymes with P and stands for Poor choice of office space.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to our own REGJB regular Jonny Blecher who is NYC this week with an all expenses paid trip to the Food Network. Blecher's submission: Cold Okra Gaspacho won him a slot as a finalist on the new series Cooking Esq., to premiere this fall. Meanwhile he gets to rub soup ladles with Rachel Ray. Ay Carrumba!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhere did Andrew "the hair" Boros move to? Did he form a partnership with Simon Steckel as rumored? Boros & Steckel?
ReplyDeleteThat last comment from Reiff pisses me off. What, now, after 20 years of self-absorbed, holier-than-thou, arrogant Bobby, we now get self-effacing, false humilty Bobby. "Sorry to take up space," you say. Yea, right. Good to know that you surround yourself with "quality" people. It must be nice, living in isolation knowing only you and your cronies are worthy of your effete disdain.
ReplyDeletedid jose quinion really marry his client's wife?
ReplyDeleteRump, I think Gibson's ERA in 68 was 1.12, not 2.12. How sick is that? Still, I go with Bonds--all the walks, no one at all protecting him in the order. If he had a normal amount of int. walks, and a good #5 hitter, he really might have hit 855.
ReplyDeleteLet me just say that Bobby Reiff was one of the first to find this blog and post comments. His comments like those of Jason Grey were always appreciated. However, some idiots, who are not nearly as good a lawyer as Mr. Reiff could not resist taking out their frustration on being a poor excuse for a lawyer by anonymously attacking Mr. Reiff. Such has just occured again. It remains the biggest dilema of running the blog. Posting stupid comments that I feel have no value whatsoever, versus free speech. As you can see, 99% of the time we go with the free speech option, but I tell you, I am seriously thinking of shaking things up here.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments Mr. Reiff, and rest assured should we ever be pulled over for suspicion of having one too many- you are our guy. (NOTE- Rumpole feels DUI can be such a serious crime, that he never has even more than one drink and drives. It is just too dangerous. And that one drink is usually thrown away at the half way point.)
Dolphins' Porter may require arthroscopic knee surgery
ReplyDeleteDolphins' Porter may require arthroscopic knee surgery
By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer
August 6, 2007
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- New Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter sought a second opinion Monday before deciding whether to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery that could sideline him for at least two weeks.
Porter has been out of action since Friday because of the injury, which began bothering him during the offseason. He was examined over the weekend and sought a second opinion from Birmingham, Ala.-based specialist Dr. James Andrews.
The Dolphins' first exhibition game is Saturday against Jacksonville. Porter would miss most or all of the preseason if he requires surgery.
"It's always good to get it done now if you have to," linebacker Zach Thomas said. "It's nothing serious. I've been in training camp, got a scope and came back two weeks later.
"I'd like for him to be here now, but to be honest, the season is much more important than right now. It's good he's taking care of that now, instead of waiting until the fourth or fifth game, and then he has to miss three or four games."
OH THIS IS JUST GREAT. I HAVE A TRICK KNEE TOO FROM CRICKET. CAN I GET HUIZINGA TO GIVE ME 20 MILLION FOR LIMPING AROUND?
AND PEOPLE WONDER WHY THE DOLPHINS CAN'T WIN ANYTHING.
Rumpy! One day you get livid when someone suggests limiting the nasty comments and now you are considering weeding out what you disagree with. It is a difficult decision for sure and you have appropriately walked that tight rope. Why you feel such a need to incessantly defend the Reiffs or Greys of this world is beyond me. I think 10:11 may have a point as to Reiff. There are many among us who are great lawyers and get great results. But how many would you want to be friends with.
ReplyDelete10:11 - jealous much? Loser.
ReplyDeleteAndy "the hair" Boros has moved from that infamous "2400 building" into the new digs with Jose Quinon. I hear that there is a great group of guys that share space together. Good luck Andy "the hair" with your new move.
