What do Richard Nixon, Alfonso Sepe, Joe Farina and Eric Hendon all have in common? They are political phoenixes rising from the ashes of defeat or (in Farina’s case) resignation.
Congratulations to Eric Hendon, just re-appointed by Governor Bush to a seat on County Court. Welcome back. See You In Court.
Anyone want to give us a Muldowny update? Source Code shenanigans?

Rumpole can’t help showing off superior knowledge of County Court History:

I remember when Judge Winton and that mean judge who would sit in temporarily and wear the cobalt blue robe (can't remember his name) made the ASA bring in the photographer to get a photo into evidence.
And Rumpole responds: Why dear reader, you are talking about the one and only Alfred Nesbitt. A cantankerous, ASA hatin, motion to suppress grantin, royal pain in the rear, old school Judge.
See You In Court.
Your Public Defender poll re affirms what many of us in the office believe: that after 30 + years of dedicated service, Warren Schwartz deserves the chance to run the PDO.
ReplyDeleteWarren takes a lot of flack on the blog but he is one of the best trial lawyers in the city. This is a guy who could have made millions IN PRIVATE PRACTICE had he left during the 80's. Instead, he dedicated his life the less fortunate.
ReplyDeleteWarren used to get great pleas from me because he approached the negotiations reasonably and humanized his clients in a way that other D-Attys did not seem to be able to do. He made me understand why a plea was the right thing to do. But, I don't recall trying any cases against him.
ReplyDeleteWarren S. is, without question, the TOP PD IN THE LAST 35 YEARS. Jack Denaro, Roy Black, etc.--all very talented-- but they cant hold even hold Warren's jock when it comes to public defense.
ReplyDeleteAs an ex-ASA, I have tried cases against Wareen, and let me tell you the man is a savage at trial. Smooth like silk, Warren charms everyone on the jury with his everyman style, but beneath is a legal genius of the highest order. I am proud to call him a friend and I support his bid to replace BHB as pd. GO WARREN!
ReplyDeleteyou all are very, very sick individuals. warren the best pd in the last 35 years? sheeet.
ReplyDeleteive seen many great lawyers in action. but warren has that special something that i refer to the "it factor". his command of the english word, his devito good looks and his dynamic wit make him what he is- the real deal. these poll number must send shivers down the spin of BHB. Could another internal revolt be on the rise?
ReplyDeleteThe Warren Schwaryz fan club meets every other Tuesday in Au Bon Pain from 11:30 to 12:30 PM.
ReplyDeleteWow Rumpole, the Hendon appointment seems to have created.....nothing.
ReplyDeleteFred Nesbitt was a hell of a judge, much better than the current crop of younh judges.
ReplyDeleteI have no feelings either way for Hendon, but what seat is he taking? Is the seat up for re-election in 2006? It would be kind of funny if he drew opposition and lost again.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I spoke to someone who is seriously contemplating running for a county spot. He has an advisor, who has suggested a couple of potential races. He wants to know what the regulars in the REG bldg would have to say is the list of "vulnerable" judges in 2006.
FYI- this guy is a former ASA (5 years or so) who then did 4 years big civil firm and is now out on his own and doing crim defense and PI. Was at the DC level before leaving. Very trial active at the SAO with a nice conviction rate. I had a case against him. He was tough but fair to my guy who was dead guilty. Very likeable personality and did not have the typical ASA power trip.
Here are the judges up for 2006:
McWhorter, Shirlyon
Francis, Mary Jo
Slom, Samuel Joseph
Hernandez, Ivan
Krieger Martin, Luise
Kravitz, Shelley J.
Shapiro, Martin
Pando, Ana Maria
Mills-Francis, Karen
Leifman, Steve
Samuels, Michael J.
White-Labora, Deborah
Hague, Andrew S.
Stein, Linda Singer
Gayles, Darrin P.
Ortiz, Maria D.
Schwartz, Sheldon Ronald
Pooler, Catherine M.
Lehr, Myriam
Silver, Roger A.
Schwartz, Caryn Canner
Thomas, Teretha Lundy
Miller, Bronwyn C.
Rippingille, Bonnie Lano
King, Lawrence D.
Samuels-he is a real piece of shit.
ReplyDeleteHendon is back, huh? Is he going to give first time DUI defendant's 6 months in jail if they are convicted at trial like the last time he was on the bench? If he is, he won't last long.
ReplyDeletehendon has an iq of about 100.
ReplyDeleteThat's about average.
ReplyDeleteI agree; Samuels is the weakest.
ReplyDeleteWhile we all know who our county judges are, that list is a real awakening. Please don't print it again.
ReplyDeletestay away from republican latins in an non presidentail election and you have a chance. Shapiro is weak.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the point of having elections if the Govenor is just going to re-appoint judges kicked out by unhappy voters? Is it that hard to find black Republicans?
ReplyDeleteBush has a list-- black, white, latin. Just rotate and pick a name. Doesn't mater about anything else--Race trumps all.
ReplyDeleteAlfred nesbit would sit on the Bench drink his vodka and snooze during the trial.
ReplyDeleteLooking at that list of judges there are a few judges without opposition that look like easy targets. Judge Hague is the next most vulnerable judge. He is at branch court with little visibility. He is pro state oriented. The best reason to go after him is that he is broke. He has no or very little money. he cant run a campaign. Invest 25k and for the next 6 yrs you get 130k not bad. Where else can you get a return like that?
ReplyDeleteHaha...I just googled my deceased Grandfather's name (Alfred Nesbitt), and found this reference. That cantankerous old school judge...yeah, that's my granddad, may he rest in peace. Haha.
