BENNETT BRUMMER RESIGNATION STUNNER?

Nah. Rumpole posts the following disclaimer:

The following is a parody. It is constitutionally protected speech. That means we will receive a downward departure in our federal sentencing guidelines for publishing constitutionally protected speech. This is a comedic (or at least it is intended to be) parody prepared by an anonymous reader and is not meant to be taken seriously.

A letter arrived from “Bennett Brummer” ß---note the quotation marks.

It has been my esteemed honor and pleasure to be your Public Defender for the last 29 years. I believe the office has made great strides during that time. We introduced an office-wide support system that is the envy of all other PD offices, and indeed, of the private bar itself. I have fought hard for appropriate funding for our employees and programs. Our technological investments have greatly aided our attorneys, staff, and clients. I am proud of these accomplishments. However, recent events (along with a healthy dose of self-analysis) have forced me to confront problems that it appears are hurting the office's mission.I suppose there comes a time for every man to realize that new ideas and new energy can sometimes only come from new blood and new leadership. With a heavy heart, but an increasingly clear conscience, I must admit to several mistakes which compromise my ability to continue to lead this office. The administration has grown bloated, ineffecitve, and very expensive. It makes keeping our top young talent increasingly impossible and hurts the morale and productivity of the entire office. This ultimately hurts our clients.Politics have also caused problems. It has played too large a role in our decision-making. I have always been a proud civil libertarian and I remain to committed to the defense of constitutional rights and liberties. Our office has accomplished much in this area. Unfortunately, I and my top staff have engaged in actions that I must now admit were shameful. I humbly apologize. Please do not think theses regrettable actions are emblematic of my body or work. They are not.I pledge to renew my vigor in the defense of liberty in whatever manner I can.We have also engaged in questionable conflicts to avoid bad press. There has never before been anyone with a strong defense orientation who wanted to be the head PD. I felt I had to stay under the radar for fear of a Republican who was really a prosecutor-in-disguise taking my place and ruining the office. Principle, however must come first. I shall now place it there.
You and your readers are absolutely correct to point out these shortcomings of my administration. I concur with much of what has been written (although I do find the tone of some writers a bit harsh and melodramatic). Therefore, with a profound sense of loss, but a rising and bouyant spirit, I must resign my post as Public Defender of the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida, effective immedaitely. Warren Schwartz, the president pro tempore of the office, will become Acting Public Defender until a special election is held in accordance with Florida law.

Sincerely, Bennett H. Brummer February 2, 2006. "

  1. You mean I'm not the Public Defender?

  2. About time Warren S. gets some respek. As for Brummer, he might as well quit. We haven't seen his car , still adorned with his giant Brummer stickers (still?), in the pdo lot in about 3 years. What do you do all day, Bennie? Sleepy time?

  3. A message to Lourdes Simon, Teresa
Enriquez, Silvia Gonzalez, Ada Pozo-Revilla and all other White
    Hispanic Female PD's and ex-PD's.

The job is yours for the taking.
Don't fall for this loyalty crap that the old-timers are pushing.
Your loyalty is to the mission of
providing quality representation to the poor criminal clients of Miami-Dade County and not to Brummer himself.

Look at the recent election results. If you come out strong,
you will win. This is your County
now. All you have to do is run as
a Democrat and the office is yours.

Hopefully, one of you has what it
    takes. Good luck!

  8. Rumpole, 2 observations from your intro to the Brummer Resignation Stunner. 1. BB wrote you to complain, and 2. BB mentioned that he thought you should pull the post. Which raises, again, this point: BB's response to speech critical of him is either to silence it, or to punish the speaker. Mr. Brummer, do not call yourself a "liberal" or a "civil libertarian" ever again. You really do act more like Miami's own little Hugo Chavez. I'm sure some apologist will write in and talk about it being an elected position, and the media, and this and that. It just seems to a lot of us that the PDO, of all places (its entire reason for existing is to protect constitutional rights), ought to be headed by someone with a personal belief in civil liberties, not just a theoretical one.

  9. Brummer is getting more and more like Fidel let alone Chavez.

And ofcourse I only mean in terms of stomping out free speech.

    He's a shark hiding in a liberal
    whale suit.

  13. All 5 of you need to get over it. The pdo in Dade is a joke, but its the same everywhere, so why single out BB?

  14. I will continue to speak out against his weak ass administration until he is finally replaced with a trial attorney leader for the pits and for all of Miami-Dade County.

Let's talk about how weak his administration and policies are.
    You got Lubel making $120,000
    working in Mental Health, Warren
making $120,000 in ERU, Kramer making $120,000 who couldn't hang at Holland & Knight for 6 months,
    Stein making $120,000 eating bagels
all day and Weed making $120,000
    buying hair pieces for himself.

What pattern do we see here? Old
Jewish lawyers all at the top of
    an administration led by another
    Old Jewish lawyer.

You got Phyllis Malinski as a lawyer. Isn't that enough right
there to say Brum's got to go.

It may be over for now, but you all might as well start planning for the future.

As one fellow wrote "it ain't over till Brummy's doing the perp walk."

  15. The public defender's office doesn't need some trial lawyer leading them into battle. It doesn't need a chearleader. It's not like Animal House with Blutarsky saying "Let's Do It!" It needs a person who can go toe to toe with the legislature, and get the resources needed for those APD's to do their job representing their indigent clients. Bennett Brummer has done just that quite well.

  16. amazing lubel is one of pds few real trial lawyers and he is now schlepping around arguing nonsense with Terry Chavez. What a waste

anyone know why Ray "holier than thou" Taseff has left the womb of Brummer?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ray left on a quest to correct the politically incorrect

    ReplyDelete
  18. Just to correct one of your misinformed readers: Brummer does not do a good job with the Legislature. Our office ranks ninth in the state in terms of funding per case, eleventh in terms of funding per atty. Anyway, Brummer so great with the Legis. that we have to hire two lobbyists to deal with them. Brummer toe-to-toe? Gimme a fucking break. The guy was asking us (asst PD's) at the last company dinner if any of us knew anyone on the committee, b'c he doesn't.But the myth endures. Anyway, we'll never stop until BB's dead, locked up, or has resigned. His choice!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Look I hate BHB just as much or more than most of you all, but that
last comment was a bit harsh.

However weak the guy is, let him live out the rest of his life in
    peace.

    ReplyDelete
  20. We wrote the post before last. Just to be clear, in no way are we in favor of physical harm or threats to physical harm against anyone.

What we are saying is that we will
hound BB as long as he remains the
    head PD.

If he quits, we'll stop. If he gets indicted, we'll stop. If he loses an election, we'll stop. And yes, if he dies of natural causes (I mean he is an old guy), then
    we'll stop.

So if BB and his pathetic cronies
    don't like him being criticized,
    stop reading the blog.

As long as we have an outlet, we will blast BB (only verbally ofcourse).
