It's not Dimaggio's 56 game hitting streak, but still... our streak of NOT attending the Miami FACDL's banquet continues tonight. We are at about 44 or 45 and we do not believe we will ever end this streak until we just fade away.
But Saturday is the big night where judges running for re-election show up and mingle with criminal defense attorneys and everyone pats each other on the back. Rubber chicken is served (along with the more important open bar- bring fives to tip those bartenders!), and a (supposedly) good time is had by all.
Our favourite part is the speculation on the awards. It's not as intense as picking the Dolphins sixth round pick in the 2028 draft, but it is still fun during those boring moments when co-counsel is trying to cross the crime scene detective and explain why their client's bloody fingerprint was found on the knife.
Our favourites....
Nicest Judge; Meanest Prosecutor; Most Helpful Clerk; Most Clueless Lead Detective; Largest Fee For a No-Action; Best New App For Games During Trial; Most Embarrassing Voir Dire Response (never to surpass "I'm pretty sure I can pay attention to the testimony so long as you zip up your fly during trial"); Most Typos in a Judicial Order;
and the highlight of the night...the awarding of the prestigious
Alex Michaels Award For Congeniality.
For those of you going, have fun!
Maybe the greatest regjb video clip of all time.
ReplyDeleteTHIS WAS BULL SHEET I VAS SET UP. VINDICATION FOR ALEX MICHEALS.
ReplyDeleteenters top ten posts of all time because of the Alex video. Classic
ReplyDeleteDumb post. Get with the current events.
ReplyDeleteYou post to trash a social event but not the relevant news in the community… “justice blog” lol ok?
ReplyDeleteIs this the FACDL/LOP spring mixer? Love to see these two social clubs get together. Take lots of pictures kids! Anything for the ‘gram.
ReplyDeleteWho is Alex arguing with?
ReplyDeleteGala sounds like a horrible time. I briefly logged into the 2021 zoom gala and there was a bizarre black lives matter ceremony happening. One of the funniest things i've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteAs a Judge, I always cringed during early morning court sessions when dear Alex walked in. I knew the peaceful and boring parade of “Judge, the defense requests a continuance” would turn into refereeing an almost free for all boxing match with the young prosecutors Alex always had a cogent and legally valid argument - but he was so forceful and not tolerant of robotic prosecutors who objected without logic. I miss his zealous and passionate representation of his “always innocent” criminal defendant clients. Rest in peace dear warrior.
ReplyDeleteOh I’m pretty sure I know who this retired judge is. Your secret is safe with me. And a great recounting of what Alex did day in and day out. He was a true warrior.
DeleteYes. You do know me Rumpole.
DeleteWow. That video is amazing. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteMy trips to Vegas with Alex will be remembered forever. He loved Vegas. Anyone have any Vegas stories?
ReplyDeleteI have a few. We checked in and two hours later I’m in my room and there’s a knock on my door. “Feeil…feeil is me Alex. “ I open the door and he’s holding his ear. His earring has become infected and he needs me to take it out. Now anyone who knows me knows I am an amateur doctor so I immediate get to work going to the convenience store and buying rubbing alcohol hydrogen peroxide needles and bandages and tweezers and after opening the infected site and removing the earring with the forceps and draining the wound including an ear lavage and bandaging it up he was back at the poker table insulting people within the hour.
ReplyDeleteSecond is another trip he felt he owed me a dinner for helping him on his ever cascading contempt cases. We went to a French steakhouse drank two bottles of Nicklaus wine (still remember it at least 15 years ago ) a beautiful seafood tower and two amazing steaks swimming in herb infused butter. One of the best dinners of my life. I miss him a lot.

THIS VAS BULLSHEET I VAS SET UP READ TRANSCRIPTS NOW. COWARD PROSECUTORS LIED CANT BEAT BEST LAWYER.
DeleteThe gala was excellent. Jimmy Odell did a great job MCing.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone of you ever go to Vegas with Dear Alex and maybe with Fred?
ReplyDeletegala was chill, a lot of judges notably missing. Also weird to have current prosecutors there. Just because you are running for judge doesnt mean we want you here, they can sit it out until you are elected.
ReplyDeleteThey still talk about Alex and crew in Vegas. He loved great food and wine. He was a talented gambler too. He had zero tolerance for injustice and incompetence, but he loved goodness and compassion to those in true need. He had much more work to do protecting the persecuted. The same with Dear Sy Gaer. Two of the best ever at the Justice Bldg. I personally love Judge Teddy Mastos too. God bless them all.
