- "And it shall be a statute to you forever, that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work... For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the Lord from all your sins."
- Leviticus 16:29-31
And it shall be to you that on the first day of October, all government work shall cease and you shall afflict yourself and not pay government workers nor shall the government be funded for on this day it shall be made for the dear leader to end all government services and you shall be in the wealthiest country in the world with no longer the capacity to make vaccines, pay social security, employ scientists, or clean up polluted areas. But upon Portland shall you make war.

I hope that this Yom Kippur my Jewish American friends will consider for a moment Kash Patel's tweet last night that the FBI will no longer do business with the ADL and views them as an enemy (in this administration if you are not a partner you are an enemy). Ostensibly this is over the ADL partnering with the FBI when James Comey was FBI director, actually it is about Kash pandering to the Trump base, which is racist and that includes anti-semitic. That base wants a white Christian nation, that's their animating political position. Spoiler alert that's bad for American Jews. But we knew all that, what is more troubling is the ADL's response to being attacked by the FBI, which was abject and immediate kowtowing to the administration.
The ADL is doing what they perceive as best for Israel, not what is best for American Jews. They are willing to support and ally with an openly anti-semitic political movement (remember Trump said there were "good people on both sides" where one side was chanting "Jews will not replace us" while burning torches) to keep the massacre of innocent Palestinians going. What Israel is doing in Gaza is not only an obvious moral failing, it is a strategic failing that is leading American Jews to ally with people who wish their destruction, either because they think Hitler was right or because they think a Jewish-Muslim war in the Middle East will bring about Armageddon and salvation for Christians and hell for everyone else.
Israel has picked their short-sighted path, and it will not end well for them. I hope more American Jews will see how bad the Israel lobby in America is for them. It is solely concerned with defending the indefensible policies of Israel, and not at all with what is best for American Jews, to the point of allying with the political movement that poses the most actual danger to American Jews since Naziism.
Such B.S. The country is shut down because of your precious Democrats and the majority leaders concern about a primary challenge from AOC. Maybe in your book a $1.5 trillion commitment for seven weeks makes sense, but you "progressives" are going to lose this one big time. By the way, you should be in temple praying instead of shelling out this crap.
The government shutdown in October 2025 is on the Democrats, plain and simple. They’re holding the country hostage over their obsession with ACA subsidies, refusing to pass a clean funding bill that keeps things running. Republicans, who control Congress and the White House, offered a straightforward plan to avoid this mess, but Senate Dems, led by Schumer, filibustered it three times, demanding handouts for programs riddled with waste—like $12 billion yearly on ineligible ACA enrollees. They’re betting on public outrage to force GOP concessions, but this stunt screws over federal workers and veterans. Democrats need to stop playing games and fund the government.
Rumpole, a nice rabbinic commentary.
The comments condemning the Dems for holding out in support of Affordable Care Act subsidies plainly come from people who have no problems getting or paying for health care. I've been there and done that; am so grateful now that I have Medicare. This is the richest country in the world, with great but expensive health care. I don't know why that is such a tough concept for lawyers who read this blog to understand.
Look, Jews have been dealing with anti-Semitism for thousands of years, so we know it comes from both sides—left and right. Right now, though, the progressive left acts like they get to tell us what to think, like we’re clueless about our own history. It’s the same way they talk down to Black conservatives, telling them they’re “wrong” for not voting how they’re supposed to, all while swearing they’re not racist. The left’s anti-Semitism, often dressed up as anti-Zionism, is louder and growing faster than the right’s, which is still there but not what it was last century. And lumping all white Christians as anti-Semitic? That’s just lazy and wrong—most don’t fit that mold. Jews and Black conservatives don’t need the left’s lectures. Their sanctimonious finger-pointing ignores half the problem and pushes away people who could be allies. It’s frustrating, and it’s gotta stop.
Trump’s “very fine people on both sides” comment came after the 2017 Charlottesville rally, where white nationalists marched with torches to protest removing a Confederate statue. Violence broke out, and a counterprotester died. In his August 15 press conference, Trump condemned neo-Nazis and white supremacists, saying they should be “condemned totally.” He meant “fine people” as folks peacefully debating the statue—some wanting it up, others down—not the torch-wielding bigots. He also called out violence from both sides, like antifa types with clubs. Critics say his words muddied things, but he wasn’t praising the racist marchers. Nice try but you are just repeating falsehoods about what Trump really said and fear-mongering Jews to accept your view.
Why should we "keep things running?" They are running off the rails. The Administration is staffed with fascists, no sense funding that.
You rather have communists?
