WEEKEND NEWS

The President of Poland , the Chief of the Polish Army and many other Polish leaders were killed yesterday in an Aeroplane crash as the Polish contingent was on a trip to Russia. The tragic story is here.

90 years ago today the Titanic left Southhampton, England for Manhattan.

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are two shots off the lead as we head into the weekend at the Masters.

We're all for exercise, and even Triathlons, but the opening round of the World Championship Triathlon is taking place in the harbour in Sydney, Australia. Due to concerns from the competitors, boats are being equipped with special electronic shark repellant devices. It seems like it's tempting fate to send so many swimmers at once in to waters populated by sharks.

Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy was the most junior member of the Senate when in 1975 he was asked to vote on President Ford's nomination of John Paul Stevens to the Supreme Court. Recall that at the time Ford nominated Stevens, he was an unelected President gearing up for perhaps one of the most difficult elections in American Presidential History.

Here's what Leahy said he did as a young Democratic Senator when asked to vote on a Republican nominee to the Supreme Court during those unprecedented times:
"As a young, freshman senator, it was a privilege to support his confirmation in 1975."

Just less than three years after the Court decided Roe v. Wade, Stevens was confirmed by a vote of 98-0. He was not asked one single question about abortion at his confirmation hearings.

The country was a few years removed from the Vietnam war and Watergate, and our senators, rather than seeking to play politics with every possible issue to exploit the weakness of the other party, joined together to help lead and heal the country.

There's nothing about that last sentence that holds true today.

Enjoy your weekend.

I don't believe in coincidences.

A few days ago some political big-wigs floated a North Dade Judge as a compromise pick for the 3rd DCA. The Judge, who apparently had been notified of this was waiting to respond, which he did, with a passionate defense of the peoples court-county court.

Less than two days later Justice Stevens retires- and now President Obama needs a name that can easily be confirmed during a summer session right before mid-term elections.

Coincidence?

I think not.

We need a purple robe on the Supreme Court- especially if the Justice is also wearing a bright orange and green tie

Shumie, Shelly and the Q will be interviewed by President Obama to fill retiring associate justice John Paul Stevens' seat in the U.S. Supreme Court. President Obama has found that they are the most qualified persons to compete for the seat despite repeated pleas by Patricia Kopco and Miguel de la O to be considered for the appointment. President Obama will announce his nominee at Shumie time next Friday, however, that should not be taken as an indication of who the nominee will be.

How nervous is William Johnson right about now? He thought his "brothers" would be able to protect his seat. Things were looking good...then along comes Judge Kreeger and just pisses all over Johnson's chances of keeping his seat. Not even his "brothers" can protect him from a man with 300k in the bank and a spanish last name. Say good by Judge Johnson, hello Judge De La O! The "brothers" can thank Judy K.

ASA's and PD's no longer allowed to speak with each other unless on the record. See the Broward blog - more craziness up there!

Why give opposition to Judge Johnson? He's a good juvenile delinquency judge. Those who want opposition for him probably don't practice in juvenile court and don't know Judge Johnson.

Much like the teachers "sickout" which will occur tomorrow, I have heard rumblings that many ASAs will also have a "sickout" sometime in May to prove that they should be compensated accordingly. Rumors of the pay raise, albeit tiny, are true. However, many fear that they will be forced to pay for their health care premiums soon.

Much like teachers who cannot strike under Florida law, the ASAs believe the "sickout" will have a stronger implication on the community, as there is not a substitute teacher who can handle cases. The PDs office, in a sign of solidarity, will be joining in the "sickout."

Any ASA who particpates in a "sickout" will be fired. Any ASA who talks about their particpation will be fired again. Also, with the special powers granted to me, I will fire any APD or other court staff who does the same.
