FUN WITH TRIVIA

Because our dear readers tonight are celebrating with Trivia, we devote a whole post to it.

We will start it off:

Name the lawyers on both sides and the Judges for these famous defendants:

1) Arthur McDuffie

2) Joyce Cohen

3) Dieter Reichman

4) Officer William Lozano

5) Extra Credit: The Miami River Cops case: (lots of players on both sides)

Double extra credit for any PD/ASA hired after 2000 who knows any answers: you will indeed be commended for being a student of the history of the REGJB.

True or False:

1) The Investigator for the Dade County State Attorneys Office played a role in the Watergate Investigation.

2) Chief ASA George Yoss was once accused in a National Magazine of being Deep Throat.

3) All Offices of the SAO and PDO used to be in one building.

4) The Former Chief of the ASA Legal Division Richard Shiffrin was in the Pentagon when it was attacked on 9/11.

5) Our Old Friend Bennett Brummer used to be lead counsel in all Death Penalty cases handled by the PD's office in the 1970's.

6) There are more Ex-PD's as Judges then Ex- ASA's.

7) There was a Judge in the REGJB who did not go to law school.

8) Judges stopped sending drugs as evidence to the Jury room when in a "highly" publicized incident, not all the drugs that went in, came out of the Jury room?

9) A Judge once sent a Jury out to deliberate, went to lunch, went home, and forgot about the Jury?

10) Jurors once got into an argument in the Jury room and one used a knife in evidence to stab the other one.

9:02 you got most wrong- wait until we post our answers.

McArthur- Eddie O'Donnell for the defense; Susan Dannley for the SAO and Reid Rubin.
And Eddie O stunned the court by waiving closing after Dannley gave her initial closing argument.
Bold Move.
Lost the case.

Yoss tied Merc, and Morphonios sent him to prison ("sorry Merc")
Morris later called Yoss a "Danny Devito Look alike, in his book.)

Shenberg-still in prison- Steve Bronis for the defense;
Sepe- hung jury, but pled to prison time- Eddie O tried the case.
Gelber- pled, represented by Sky Smith.

Fast Phil Davis- Not Guilty- walked out the door and home by Former federal Judge Alcee Hastings.

Abe prosecuted Charlie street. PD's represented him. Sentenced to death.

sitting in the front row said...

Actually, Phil Davis was mostly representing himself in Court Broom(and doing a very poor job of it). He asked some of the stupidest questions I ever heard to lead witness and ex-judge Roy T. Gelber. Fortunately, James Jay Hogan, who was representing ex-judge, then defense attorney David Goodhart, ended up doing the cross on several witnesses (including Gelber) for Davis to help repair his screw ups.

Rumpole said...

NO- PHIL DAVIS WAS REPRESENTED BY ALCEE HASTINGS- ALTHOUGH I DO NOT DISCOUNT THE POSSIBILITY ALCEE WAS NOT PRESENT FOR SOME OF THE CASE.

Of course, James Jay Hogan was and is a pro.

Anonymous said...

902 again oh you tricky one rumphil, all of the offices of sao were not in court house county and juvie were elsewhere same for pds

not fair trick question

Anonymous said...

what ever happened to "Judge Hernandez the Movie"

I was looking forward to watching it.

Rumpole said...

11:48 CORRECT= FALSE is the correct answer to 3- The offices of SAO and PD were not all in the same building.

see 9:02 (i know you're the same) you got many wrong, INCLUDING THAT RICHARD SHIFFRIN, WAS IN THE GENERAL COUNSEL TO THE PENTAGON OFICE AND WAS IN THE PENTAGON ON 9/11.
OTHER THAT YOU GOT WRONG WILL BE EXPLAINED LATER.

Rumpole said...

To clairy- the PDO and SAO were in the REGJB but the SAO had other offices in other buildings as well, like Juvie, for instance. It was a trick question.

re: 11:46-- Koch + Godwin, not Edith

abe laeser said...

Great recent New Yorker article about how Shiffrin, even as Pentagon legal counsel for security, did not not what the Cheney/Rumsfeld folks were doing with the 4th Amendment. Guess he was just too 'liberal' to really understand the Constitution.

Rumpole said...

Good for Richard.

SAO county court offices were on the first floor of the mjb, where courtrooms 1-1 through 1-4 are today. 1-4 was actually the SAO intake unit, presided over, at one time, by our fave opportunist, jeffy swartz.

Anonymous said...

Here's one for you:

Who was the ASA whom Judge Jeffrey Swartz put in the box for refusing to nolle prosse a case?

Anonymous said...

Judge Mattie Belle Davis didn't go to law school. Back in the 90's she was hearing domestic violence injunctions at MJB.

Anonymous said...

That must have been when the PD's actually handled the high profile cases.

Anonymous said...

Alvarez was on Telemundo again this morning, where is he getting the gelt for broadcast television. Bronwyn you better get off your a** and start campaigning. HL got us all to support you at CABA over a fellow Hispanic, you better not leave us hanging.

Frijoles Stupidos said...

oh, the hypocracy! HL had to muscle you to support the more qualified candidate. cause otherwise you vote for the "fellow hispanic". im gonna puke.

herald watch said...

anyone notice the herald is starting to endorse - they did some broward seats today.

Is it true that Patty Marino's endorsement will be by Dan LeBetard in the sports section?

Rumpole said...

Judge Mattie Belle Davis Diddn't go to law school; neither did Judge Morphonios, may they both rest in peace. Any others? (boy is that a hanging curve ball).

Anonymous said...

Judge Leah Simms once held me in contempt for nolle prossing too loudly... I was in her office in sorta custody for about 15 minutes when Chief Judge Marshall Ader stepped in and told her she could not do that.

The ultimate quick release.

Guess who I am?

Anonymous said...

I think Morphonious did go to law school.

Phil R said...

Judge Snyder once had me cuffed and put in the box for asking for a continuance after picking a jury when, after the jury was picked, the officer crashed his ultra-light plane and was in the hospital. When a chief assistant saw me in the box, he left, came back, had corrections hold up my hands while cuffed, took a picture and left laughing. Snyder released me around noon.

Post the photo Phil R.

To Frijoles Stupidos:

It appears HL muscled candidates to get out of races as well as lawyers for endorsements, then he left them hanging without supporting them in their new "open seat" campaigns (ask Armenteros-Chavez).

not hl said...

funny, so many people on this blog accuse HL of so many things, but do nothing about it. If you have proof that he did something illegal, YOU'RE A LAWYER - DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT OTHER THAN ANONYMOUSLY ALLEGE IT YOU COWARDS

Anonymous said...

To not hl:

We huff and puff a great deal, but deep down we are all wimps (so HL, as corrupt he may be, wins).

Hector, Hector, Hector...watch yourself. Bad enough that you sit on any JNC and sit as treasurer for so many judges and judicial candidates. Now your are seen at events actually camapigning for them. The same people who might be petitioning for an appointment down the line. It's just inappropriate. How come you partner Gamba never crosses that line? Hector you know as well as I do that the media and the press reads this blog so watch your back because people are watching you.

Anonymous said...

...and your buddies Migna and Robert should watch out too.

Which former ASA testified as character witness for Harvey Shenberg?

Anonymous said...

Judge Snyder used to say...

Mr. (Prosecutor)... how many arrests does it take to equal one conviction?

frijoles mongos said...

you missed the point (since it was made in english, i understand).
HL muscled you into voting for the obviously more qualified candidate. you should vote for that person anyway.
you vote had to be pried away from your "vote for the fellow hispanic" grubby hands.
alvarez is a boob and yuo were gonna vote for him blindly like
most of of the hispanic voters.

Alvarez was seen cutting down signs. But it was Bardiwill's. Go figure.

Trust me Rump, as I sat in for most of the trial: Alcee was absent for just about the entire trial (remember, Phil had no money and he complained that he had to take the bribes becauses he was a judge and yet he had to take the bus to the REG each day). Alcee was only there for the Opening & Closing (which was masterful) and perhaps a few witnesses (although I can't think of any).

I do concur that Hogan is a true pro and one of the best defense attorneys this town has ever seen.

Anonymous said...

Who saw Alvarez taking dwon signs? Or at least in what area and what time of day?

Anonymous said...

Isn't it interesting that as Miller signs appeared Alvarez signs vanished? Bronwyn what did you do with those Alvarez signs?

Anonymous said...

Judge Miller has integrity and runs a clean campaign based on her qualifications.

George and Juan - why are you on the blog? Don't you have a few thousand more misleading, oversize ALVAREZ signs to post in order to confuse voters into thinking you are MAYOR CARLOS ALVAREZ or his long lost cousin from Cuba and not just some "TRAFFIC TICKET GUY"? Meaning, isn't the bane of your entire campaign? Misleading signs to confuse voters and false blog posts to disparage Judge Miller?

Anonymous said...

CORRECTION: ISN'T THAT THE BANE OF YOUR ENTIRE CAMPAIGN?

Anonymous said...

Alvarez has a bane to his campaign? I can imagine him on the bench looking like the guy (in the video Rumpole posted) wearing a bucket on his head and getting pelted with tennis balls--totally dazed and confused as he is confronted with important legal issues which go beyond "police officer is here, change of plea", "wrong statute, move to dismiss" and "pretty please no points so I don't have to refund the fee."

Anonymous said...

Schwarts' signs are covering others. Not fair.

Anonymous said...

Children, children. Grow up. If a person is naive enough to vote for a candidate because his/her sign is on a fence, this is a sad commentaryforthis community. However, some say that large signs may make a difference because the candidate is perceived to have more $$/ influence/ backing/ influence. In any event, most judicial races are undervotes because no one knows the candidates. And, trust me, lawyers don't have enough percentage of the votes to make a difference. So, there,I said it. That's my opinion

8:23 is on point. sounds like he/she has run for office before and kmows something. I agree about the signs. I can't remember one from the next. just a silly bunch of bluuuurrrrrrrrrrs.

Anonymous said...

Hey, about that Bardawil Herald endorsement. Manno-Schnurr must be fuming. They didn't even say anything nice about her. Jose Sanchez-Frenchie got more good publicity than she did....... What a day.

Anonymous said...

Would you vote for someone b/c they have a sign on a fence at a construction site?
